Sworn Donald Trump enemy John McCain admitted Wednesday that he passed the dossier of claims of a Russian blackmail plot against the president-elect.
The Arizona senator issued a public statement amid mounting questions of his exact role in the affair - and how a document riddled with errors and unverifiable claims came to be published.
'Late last year, I received sensitive information that has since been made public,' he said.
'Upon examination of the contents, and unable to make a judgment about their accuracy, I delivered the information to the Director of the FBI.
'That has been the extent of my contact with the FBI or any other government agency regarding this issue.'
But the 2008 Republican loser, who disowned his party's candidate weeks before the election, may have been far more intimately involved than that.
The chain of how the document reached the FBI is not officially known.
However Carl Bernstein, the Watergate reporter who contributed to the first story about its existence, published by CNN on Tuesday afternoon, suggested that McCain was handed it by a former British ambassador to Moscow.

So I’m not alone in thinking that he was handed by the NVA over to the DNC, and has been their mole - one of them - since.
“Is” being the operative word here. “Was,” however...
And, in the opinion of many, the “was” is what keeps him in the anti-GOP camp.

Kinda looks like McCain wasn’t passive - but that he paid for the report...
I suspect Putin has played a lot of people with this story, it contains some imagery that while apparently untrue would still convey an attitude held towards Obama in Moscow, while at the same time trapping some other hawkish opponents in an epic bungle that will forever reduce their credibility.
Game set and match to Putin. Now he faces a more adult adversary, my guess is that Trump will move fairly early to establish new rules of engagement with Russia and they won’t be a sweetheart deal by any means, but will contain a mixture of advances and realistic appraisals.
Putin’s days of playing brilliant head games with western intel and media are about to come to an end; it has been a wild ride, and this last chapter must be good for a three day cackle in the Kremlin. At this time of year, not much else to do anyway.

If John McCain were a politician from New York, he would be a liberal Democrat. As one goes West the nation becomes more liberal, and McCain is nowhere near being a conservative, the bulk of the Eastern US Republican party... add in a Bush from Liberal Blue Mass. and you end up with Compassionate Conservatism... Only if Republicans accept that liberals can be republicans can one accept McCain as a true republican. Hence we dislike him for not being a democrat proper so we know where his vote always counts.
I don’t know what, if anything Donald Trump can do to effect John McCain, but you can bet Trump will never forget about this
proverbial knife in the back so close to Inauguration Day.
It was ‘never trumper Republicans’ who paid to have the ‘report’ created. McCain wasn’t mentioned as one of the Republicans who paid for this garbage to be created but he also wasn’t left out. McCain was the person who pushed this... pond scum.
