Majority back ban on handguns in checked baggage
YouGov Polls ^ | 10 January 2017 | YouGov Poll

Posted on 01/10/2017 3:09:49 PM PST by backwoods-engineer

Most Americans, including half of independents and Republicans, support a ban on checking handguns into aircraft baggage

In recent years, America has, unfortunately, become used to mass shootings, but the recent mass shooting by an Iraq War veteran in Fort Lauderdale has sparked some concern. In the shooting at the Florida city's airport, the man, Estaban Santiago, had checked a handgun into his baggage. After retrieving it from the carousel he loaded it in a bathroom and then allegedly murdered five people, exposing a weakness in airport security.

The latest research from YouGov finds that most Americans (57%) support a ban on checking handguns into luggage, while only 26% oppose a ban. Support for a ban is strongest among Democrats (72%) but even 49% of independents and Republicans support the measure.

The partisan divide on the issue of handguns on planes is markedly smaller than the divide when it comes to general laws on the sale of handguns. While 73% of Democrats want it to be harder to buy a handgun, only 32% of Republicans agree.

“Do you know how many planes finish missions during wartime with tons of bullet holes? Doesn’t really hurt anything unless it goes through a hydraulic line (or pilot) or something and all that stuff has multiple redundancies anyway.”

I will bet you that none of the planes you describe were pressurized, because you breach a pressurized aircraft hull and it’s quite likely to go boom even from a bullet hole if it hits in the right place.

Are you talking about pressurized aircraft of a configuration somewhat close to an airliner at 30,000 feet plus?

Well that is certainly flirting with the scenario I had in mind.

Thanks

Thank goodness he landed in a gun free zone, so no one was injured.

Not just while traveling. It means you must go unarmed once you reach your destination and for as long as you are there, however long that may be.

All it takes is for one guy to shoot out a window. The end.

Explosive decompression is a Hollywood fabrication. It just doesn't happen. A bleeds through any hole with a gentle "hiss". Bear in mind that the cabin pressure is reduced a little and the outside pressure is low. There isn't much of a pressure differential, less than 15 PSI for sure. Besides, a hole in a window or even a missing window is not a structural failure.

Submarines can spring a leak at depth, and they get a good hard spray without hull collapse. The pressure differential there is a few thousand PSI.

Good point, probably not. I’m thinking WWII-era bombers, so no.

A good example of gun-violence-free places is Federal court buildings, State court buildings, Federal office buildings, etc. All are equipped with metal detectors and no terror event takes place there.

O RLY?

"We have a four-year reprieve now."

Sure...go back to sleep, all's well and it always will be. Nothing to see here, go back to watching the Golf Channel and humming "Don't worry, Be Happy".

No, we don't have a four-year reprieve. We don't have a one-day reprieve. The reason the Left has been gaining ground for the last 30 years is that they're like a bunch of ants, always working working working toward the goal. The reason we've lost ground since Ronald Reagan left office is we squander the momentum we've built after each big victory, and go back to sleep. We think we have a reprieve, only we don't.

This fight's only starting, and if you think the Leftists are ready to play nice, you're naive. If you think the Pubbies in Congress have suddenly found their testicles, you're delusional. Wake up, newbie.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
