I’m the oldest of 9, and am familiar with the wooden spoon and the belt, and never considered it abuse.
I limit it to the hand.

I agree with both of you although I have swatted my 3 girls on the bottom occasionionally. It was extremely effective and I only had to do it once or twice. I was raised in a traditional Italian family where wooden spoons, hands, shoes, etc were routinely used. I remember my mother smacking me in the mouth when I was particularly disrespectful. It communicated that I had crossed a line like sitting in timeout never could have.
