A mass shooting at Florida's Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood airport Friday left five dead and dozens wounded, and the suspect apparently kept the gun used in the attack in his checked luggage.
The TSA allows passengers to carry firearm while traveling through US airports, but strict rules govern how passengers are supposed to handle them.

That is checkig guns. Some states allow guns. Outside security.
The kneejerk reaction will be to ban all firearms in checked baggage.
Whatever they were, there’s a good chance there will be changes on the horizon (unless Trump puts his foot down).
No reason why you can’t just post the rules. They’re not copyrighted or anything.
This isn’t rocket science. Anyone can pull up, get out of the car, walk in an airport and open fire. And they can do it at any other place where people gather. He just happened to choose this particular airport in this city for some reason.
Maybe he was angry about a past event the last time he visited Ft. Lauderdale or passed through the airport. Maybe he was convinced by an ISISI video to choose FLL airport -specifically as his target.
With the amount of rounds he used, Santiago could have went to the mall, movies, park, festival, McDs, or any number of places and killed the same number if not more back in Alaska or Phoenix or LA or NJ.
Airports, particularly that one, are loaded with armed LEO both local and federal. He probably expected to get shot and is shocked that he didn’t. He appears to have had no getaway plan. What was his plan, hail a cab if not suicide?
The parking facility and all roads in and out of that airport are loaded with cameras and cops. Within seconds, all the roads are closed. No one was going in or out. He made no attempts to exit, that we know of.
This was a mass-murder-terrorism-suicide-by-cop act. As a military guy, he might have seen this atmosphere as a challenge. We may never know the truth.
Was listening to Fox news today as they reported this story. Of course they had to bring on some ex cops, both from New York. They both mentioned HR 218 and how it now allowed people to check guns in baggage like it was a new thing. Both reporters agreed with them. HR 218 refers to current and retired LEOs carrying concealed weapons. I wish that Fox would learn that California or New York cops know as much about gun laws as I know about the workings at the event horizon of a black hole. I would love to be able to call in and point out just how ignorant or how big a liar these guys are while they are on air.
Funny how govt always has people so ready to comment on such “random acts”.
I’ve transported a handgun in checked baggage. My CCW was valid on both ends of the trip. Gun has to be unloaded in locked case in one bag, and ammo in separate bag. Did it many times.
I fly all the time with 2 firearms checked. Ammo in the same bag separate locked container. Both cable locked to the internal frame of my locked hard case luggage. TSA has only once called me aside after security to come watch them open my bag which once its tagged “fragile” they know it’s carrying firearms. on the receiving end it come up the bag chute like every other bag. most states don’t ban chl carry in the unsecured portion of terminal buildings which baggage claim is outside the fed tsa area. Florida does make the entire building a gun free zone with the predictable outcomes.in states where my chl lets me carry inside I arm up in the bathroom and carry out from there into the rental car area and every else allowed in that state.
The reports are saying he got into an altercation on the flight with some passengers and they he shoots up the baggage claim where those passengers are. I’m betting the victims will turn out to be the same people from his flight and he went all ptsd rage on them. snapped got his legally checked firearm and went for pay back in the last area he would see these people again. once they leave baggage they are gone forever. if it was suicide by cop he would have pointed the gun loaded or not at the cops, the fact that he on his own layed down prone signals surrender not come shoot me. The cops didn’t force him down he went down after he ran out of rounds and rage over.
I leave San Fransicko International Airport, SFO, and get TSA hands all over the inside of my luggage when I’m traveling with a firearm to Las Vegas McCarran International Airport. Traveling back to SFO through McCarran, I only get the stub of the firearms declaration form and a hearty “Bon Voyage!”
Business Insider is a leftist site that routinely gets things wrong.
Dozens Wounded? Seems like there were eight.
This is the first I've read anything on this possibility in this sad situation. Do you have any links to share? I'm going looking now but would love to read anything on this.
look to the right, there is a post here on FR with an article saying there was an altercation on the flight, and some rather hysterical posting from some people hyperventilating that the TSA should have DONE SOMETHING ect...The TSA job is to make sure the controlled item gets from point A to point B and out of the secured zone onto baggage claim that’s it. The air martial should have been called if true. But how many times doe verbal altercation get flagged? I fly alot and people are pricks when crammed into a plane and treated like luggage..glares at southwest airlines. I always chill at the very back have a nice big jack on the rocks and laugh at the people stressing over bin space and windows seats. last off the plane casually stroll to baggage that won’t even be running when you walk up for your flight. ha suckers.
There were reports of a possible altercation involving Santiago on the flight to Fort Lauderdale, but law enforcement sources said investigators haven't discovered any evidence to support those claims.
The airline said it had received no reports of any incidents during the flight.
"Reports from customers and crew onboard the flight in question indicate that there was not a customer altercation during the flight," according to a Delta Spokesperson.
Knee jerk is correct. This guy could have just walked in from outside and done the same, no flying required.
