Why on earth would we want to acquire a debt ridden island with its hand perpetually out to us for money as a state? Only the PR head of the NYC Council, who spends about 99% of her time lobbying for us to hand over our hard-earned monies to PR instead of attending to the needs of the NYC citizens who elected her, would seem to think so.

Didn’t the citizens of PR just vote NO to statehood?

Now that they’re bankrupt, they want to become a state. Does that include military bases too?

And just why would the United States want to add a fiscally irresponsible, bankrupt, criminal burdened, Democrat infested pack of people as a new state? What is in it for us?

Let’s say they do get this passed in PR... what is the process of approval on the US side?

The Puerto Ricans will continue to flee to the Mainland United States and mostly live and vote in Florida.

They act like it’s up to them. WE get to decide who is in OUR union. As it is, they should have been cut lose a long time ago. Send them packing and make all Puerto Ricans who were born outside of the US have to register as legal aliens who can only be here for a certain amount of time. Maybe if they have a stake in their island’s future it won’t continue to be the corrupt hellhole it’s become.

He delivered his speech in Spanish?

To become a state in the US?

Hahahahahahahahahahaha!

$70,000,000,000 of debt.

Puerto Rico has been running a government Ponzi Scheme for years.

The problem with Puerto Rico is the Puerto Rican people. They kept voting for liars who stole the money.

Their head guy could have stood up and said he was going to crap $70,000,000,000 worth of gold and the Puerto Ricans would have given him a standing ovation and some Ex-Lax to make sure they got it all.

“Send them packing and make all Puerto Ricans who were born outside of the US have to register as legal aliens who can only be here for a certain amount of time.”

If they were born in Puerto Rico, they are American Citizens, and you cannot make them register as aliens and you cannot send them packing.

They are Americans, with the exact same passport as you and the exact same rights of citizenship as you.

It constantly amazes me that normally intelligent FReepers don’t realize that Puerto Ricans are Americans.

“Let’s say they do get this passed in PR... what is the process of approval on the US side?”

A vote of the population of the people in Puerto Rico which has already passed.

A proposed state constitution that does not conflict with the United States Constitution.

A vote of the House and Senate.

The signature of the president.

Puerto Rico would be a fine addition to the Union, however they have to get their fiscal house in order first. We have enough issues with the fiscal time bombs in California and Illinois.
