A taxpayer-funded political science professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has concluded that political conditions in North Carolina are comparable to political conditions in totalitarian nations such as Cuba, Venezuela and Iran because Republicans are too politically successful.
The professor, Andrew Reynolds, aired his 936-word grievance last week in The News & Observer, a newspaper out of Raleigh.
North Carolina can no longer be classified as a full democracy, Reynolds declares, because the statewide Republican Party has been too successful at winning the states winner-take-all elections.
The winner-take-all system which is excessively common throughout the United States is a huge problem, Reynolds pontificates, because one party wins just half the votes but 100 percent of the power. North Carolina Republicans have won so many elections in recent years that they have a huge legislative majority and absolute veto-proof control.

The Constitution REQUIRES states to have Republican form of government, not a democracy.
Article IV, Section 4. The United States shall guarantee to every state in this union a republican form of government, and shall protect each of them against invasion; and on application of the legislature, or of the executive (when the legislature cannot be convened) against domestic violence.
We are NOT a democracy, either in whole or in part.
But we are being "invaded" -- more general government irresponsibility. But Hope and Change are coming -- DJT.
Not any more!
Well, don’t tell them.
That asshole should try living in Massachusetts
This guy is blind to large monoparty ‘rat urban utopias and the many Peoples’ Republics centered on a large university.
I suspect Louisiana will revert soon. Jon Bel sold himself as a conservative Democrat of the older school, and touted his military service. The fact that he has the same last name as one of Louisiana's most popular (and crooked) governors didn't hurt. But as soon as sworn in, he showed his true colors. He might wangle being re-elected, but I doubt he will show any "coat-tail" effect once term-limited out.
He should move to a state like Hawaii where it is the other way around. Democrats control everything.
I guess then it would be a democracy for him.
Just what is scientific about politics anyway?
Liberal professor and a knowledge of actual history or the Constitution just don’t go together. He is an idiot and will guide young minds at school to be the same. None of this ever bothered him when liberals were in power.
Be nice if “Global Warming” / “Climate Change” melted all the snowflakes!
Winner takes all is the very definition of a Democracy. Note that H->! did NOT win a majority of the Popular Vote.
Well, having moved to Oregon from Cali, I think this is correct.
At least I still have gun rights in Oregon. But my vote does not count for much.
His comments were directed to North Carolina not the US, nonetheless; your argument still holds.
Boo hoo hoo-Move to North Korea where there is total 24/7/365 control by one commie. You would be happier there and we would be happy for you too. Win win.
See #21
Hey, professor Dumb@ss....was it ever created as a democracy in the first place? Moron.
Gonna have to ask the globull warming folks.....
Three Maps that show just how dominate the GOP is after the Nov. 8, 2016 election. They are
on the Washington Post website so they can’t be posted on FR but they are interesting.

Make sure you add Massachusetts and Connecticut!
It never was.
