Cops: John Conor Kennedy (Bobby's grandson) arrested after Aspen bar fight

A 22-year-old member of the Kennedy family arrested after a bar fight early Thursday was defending a gay friend who was being bullied, his father said.

"Conor has always reacted against bullying," said Robert Kennedy Jr. "I'm happy he stood up for his friend."

John Conor Kennedy - who goes by Conor - had asked a group of four men to apologize to his friend for calling him a common homophobic slur an hour before the fight erupted at about 1:40 a.m. outside the Bootsy Bellows nightclub, Robert Kennedy said.

Conor Kennedy’s gay friend, Robert Kennedy said, terming the incident "menacing." ... "I'm very sorry it turned into a police incident," he said. "(Conor's) not liking the attention."

Robert Kennedy said his son was out with a group of friends while in Aspen for the Christmas holidays. He said he regretted Aspen police having to get involved in the incident because of the way officers treated the Kennedy family when his brother, Michael Kennedy, died Dec. 31, 1997, on Aspen Mountain after skiing into a tree.

Conor Kennedy is the oldest son of Robert Kennedy Jr. and his second wife, Mary Richardson, according to People.com. Robert Kennedy Jr. is the second son of former President John F. Kennedy’s brother, Robert F. Kennedy. Conor Kennedy briefly dated Taylor Swift in 2012 when he was 18, according to the website.

He defended his friend.

The Aspen Times reports that Kennedy, 22, also tussled briefly outside the bar with an Aspen police officer before he was arrested with the help of a bystander.

Kennedy was charged with disorderly conduct, taken to jail and issued a summons to appear in Aspen Municipal Court, Aspen police Sgt. Rick Magnuson told the Aspen Times.

The incident began about 1:40 a.m. Thursday when police were called to the Bootsy Bellows nightclub to deal with people who wouldn’t leave, Magnuson told the Aspen Times.

Arriving officers saw a fight breaking out between two men. One of the men, later identified as Kennedy, reportedly grabbed the other man by the shirt and hit him four or five times in the back of the head with his fists, Magnuson said.

Officers attempted to break up the fight, but Kennedy continued to try and attack the man, prompting officers to try and restrain him, Magnuson said.
