Foreign governments concerned about climate change may soon be spending more time dealing with Sacramento than Washington.
President-elect Donald J. Trump has packed his cabinet with nominees who dispute the science of global warming. He has signaled he will withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement. He has belittled the notion of global warming and attacked policies intended to combat it.
But California a state that has for 50 years been a leader in environmental advocacy is about to step unto the breach. In a show of defiance, Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, and legislative leaders said they would work directly with other nations and states to defend and strengthen what were already far and away the most aggressive policies to fight climate change in the nation. That includes a legislatively mandated target of reducing carbon emissions in California to 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030.
California can make a significant contribution to advancing the cause of dealing with climate change, irrespective of what goes on in Washington, Mr. Brown said in an interview.
*** The environmental effort poses decided risks for this state. For one thing, Mr. Trump and Republicans have the power to undercut Californias climate policies. The Trump administration could reduce funds for the states vast research community including two national laboratories which has contributed a great deal to climate science and energy innovation, or effectively nullify state regulations on clean air emissions and automobile fuel standards.
They could basically stop enforcement of the Clean Air Act and CO2 emissions, said Hal Harvey, president of Energy Innovation, a policy research group in San Francisco. That would affect California because it would constrain markets. It would make them fight political and legal battles rather than scientific and technological ones.

As long as THEY can be that government.
We’ll see, oh low IQ journalism majors.
Good on you Moonbeam!
I think a 20% tax on Pepsico should do it.
Brown knows he’ll lose this but he’s going to go this route because he wants to set himself up as the great democrat fascist hope of 2020.
Isn’t it obvious?
Tax the hell out of people to keep your marble walls immune.
There is a bit of history here. In the ‘60s California enacted emission standards for cars sold there which were much more stringent than anywhere else in U.S. Since California was such a large market, many manufacturers eventually saw the commercial wisdom of no longer making two models, one for sale in CA, and another for sale everywhere else, and only built cars to CA standards.
Unconstitutional. That power is reserved to the Federal Government.
“But California a state that has for 50 years been a leader in environmental advocacy is about to step unto the breach.”
With six of the ten top polluted cities in the country. How’s that advocacy working out for you Givernir Brown?
Nope. That is our soil, be ready to fight for it.
I haven’t traveled to California for decades, but when I did I found it to be a beautiful place. I don’t go there now because I can’t stand most of it’s people. The folks on our side down there need our help to get it back.
I don’t claim to know how to fight this fight, but giving up our soil isn’t a winning solution...that is surrender.
In the not too distant future, Latino’s will control CA thru the ballot box and I doubt they will be any more environmentally conscious than they were/are in Mexico.
Of this I am sure: When the Federal spigot is cut off, the farmers energy companies start running hourly ads on why food costs so much, and gasoline too...not to mention your AC in summer, the political climate will CHANGE RAPIDLY.
By far most of the people who support these policies don’t have a clue how much they cost. Especially for essentials. That’s been removed from the propaganda, and anyone who talks about it is cut off and demonized.
Smart Dims (oxymoron, I know) will get a head start and run for the hills now. Hells a comin’.
it under Mount Shasta.>>> except that is close to a large number of conservatives.
The NYT defending California - a twofer of BS.
“Nope. That is our soil, be ready to fight for it.”
++++
I agree completely.
This idea we should just write Califoria off is stupid on so many levels, and, to name one, if we let the Mexicans have it we then have to fight them from taking the rest of the southwest one easy state at a time.
Then the Midwest.
We’re Americans, we are going to drive out the invaders, defeat the Liberals, and keep it for the next generation to enjoy.
I actually think the Liberals are about to ‘tip over’, and Trump is going to do it.
“We’ll fight until the last dime of someone else’s money!!”
They won’t until the money dries up.
Where?
Just raise the air tax to 1c per minute.
LOL So that would be a win/win then for the brainless libertards.
Have fun bankrupting yourselves.
And if you manage to secede to live in your delusions, have fun without water.
