ENID, Okla. One Sunday after church, Jeff Mullin and his wife were in line at the Western Sizzlin steakhouse here when a man, fists clenched, threatened to beat the hell out of him.
My first thought was just to kind of try to keep things calm. Otherwise, it was going to be two old guys rolling around on the floor of the steakhouse, and that would be pretty unseemly, recalled Mr. Mullin, 64, the mustachioed senior writer for Enids daily newspaper, The Enid News & Eagle.
The dispute was not personal. It was, of all things, editorial.
Mr. Mullins red newspaper in a red county in what is arguably the reddest of states went blue this campaign season and endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. The editorial board, in a gray-shaded column on Page A4 on Oct. 9, wrote that Donald J. Trump lacked the skills, experience or temperament to hold office. The headline and subhead read: For U.S. president: Hillary Clinton is our choice for commander in chief.
It was the first Democratic endorsement for president in the modern history of the newspaper, which was founded in 1893. As the mans reaction at the steakhouse suggested, Enid was stunned, and this slow-paced agricultural town of 52,000 near the Kansas state line has not been the same since.
The News & Eagle, with a circulation of 10,000, lost 162 subscribers who canceled the paper. Eleven advertisers pulled their ads, including a funeral home that had a sizable account. Someone stuck a Crooked Hillary bumper sticker on the glass doors of the papers downtown office. A man left a late-night message on the publishers voice mail, expressing his hope that readers would deliver, to put it delicately, a burning sack of steaming excrement to the paper.

Be a nice big cross burning in front of said publications if they had endorsed Trump.
To put things in context, here are the two above the fold Headlines on the Christmas Day edition of the LA Times.
Sen. Jeff Sessions thorny history on race (and) WHEN AMERICA’S DOOR SLAMS SHUT (yes, all Caps).
The first story is exactly what you would expect.
The second story uses the word “migrants” about some poor folks that fought their way to America only to be met with “a soul-crushing round ticket” that we the American Taxpayers paid for.
These were not Mexicans, they were from Bangladesh. The word “illegal” didn’t make it into print.
Meh...NYT? Fake News.
Exactly my thoughts.
Very well could be a lying liberal "news" organization inflicting its corrupt values on a conservative moral Midwest city. They appear to be a local paper "in name only", and if so, should be driven out of business ASSP.
Thos NYT story is fake-news. The real story is that every paper whose editorial sided with a corrupt political machine has along with that candidate extremely poor judgement, and are likely themselves unable to discern truth from error.
It’s one thing to stand up for principle, it’s another to stand down, which is what this senior idiotor did.
“There used to be a saying that the editorial page was the soul of a newspaper, and if thats the case, weve got a lot of weak-souled newspapers in the country because theyre afraid to offend anybody, said Terry M. Clark, the director of the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame and a professor of journalism at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond. This is an excellent example of the way American journalism ought to be standing for something and, man, it takes guts to do that in Enid, Okla.”
And what exactly did this editorial board decided to stand for? Continued corruption and malfeasance rather than even consider that a successful person outside of politics might actually be able to do the job of the President? How is that taking a stand? A stand for the known to be failed status quo vs taking a chance on something different? That’s not taking a principled stand, that’s taking a stand out of fear!
They basically said the status quo of known and obvious corruption was better than contemplating a regular citizen be our President.... This is a stand completely at odds of the very principle of government “of, by and for the people”.
Sorry NYT, but the people have spoken, and those that share your western civilization hating communist leaning world views might fly in Manhattan, where people who have never worked a hard day in their lives can make 7 figures on a deal for corn futures, that hundreds of farmers in fly over country actually broke their backs for months to produce the good... but out in the real world, where folks know what hard work really looks like... your view gets a big old no sale.
Muncie StarPress, same thing. I spoke with an op/ed editor and she said, “You’ve got Kathleen Parker and George Will.”
The only thing that gets their attention is to cancel your subscription, which I did.
Do you mean the same Justice Kennedy who wrote the opinion legalizing gay "marriage"? Doesn't sound Conservative to me.
Fact of the matter is, Roberts is to the right of center on most issues, but is not an originalist. His big Obamacare problem is that he was looking at his (or the Court's) legacy, not the Constitution or the law.
Kennedy is a libertarian, not a Conservative. As such, he substitutes his judgement for what the Constitution says. That is dangerous on the right or the left.
I hope that Trump can get at least one and hopefully 3 or 4 originalists on the USSC. If he can replace Scalia, Ginsberg, Kennedy and Bryer with younger originalists, we should have a fairly Conservative court for many years. A younger replacement for Thomas might be nice, too - but he is only 68.
Only 162 cancelled their Subscriptions?????
Apparently you weren’t dealing with a true liberal. A true liberal would have immediately canceled your subscription knowing that the lack of a paper for your dog to retrieve would cause you distress. As for the impact on the dog? That would be viewed by a liberal as collateral damage.
Yup!...fake news!!!.....hearsay without the “man” and witness's corroborating it!! (when I 1st heard the story I heard that when Jeff Mullins 1st entered the steakhouse he was drunk and screamed...F#&# Trump ...and Enid Oklahoma Too!) Send that to the paper from an anonymous source!
Just losing 162 subscribers is not that many at all.
Forgiven? I will never forgive, forget, or trust anyone who supported/endorsed Hillary. That editorial board made their choice, and it was an irreversible decision.
Key word: **threatened** to beat the hell out of him.
Did. Not. Happen. No blows exchanged.
He could have said something like ‘I hope your rag goes bankrupt and your competitor whips your arse.’
Story implies Trump supporter’s words constituted a physical assault, but doesn’t even tell us what words were actually used.
Then makes sure to inform us that the Hillary-endorser was the blessed peacemaker who defused the situation. Right.
More manipulative editorializing in a “news” story.
If situation were reversed, the Hillary brownshirts would have really assaulted the editor, and the story-writer would have commended them.
I’ve been through there many times. I hear there is a kitchen and bath fixture store in one of the shopping centers that handles fixtures when they are not hunting dinosaurs off Costa Rica.
It was the loss of ad money that hurt them.
