HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Frustrated after seeing another candidate secure the presidency without winning the national popular vote, mostly Democratic lawmakers in several capitols want their states to join a 10-year-old movement to work around the Electoral College.
In states including Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Ohio and New Mexico, legislators have said they plan to introduce legislation that would require their state's Electoral College voters cast ballots for the presidential candidate who earns the most votes nationwide, regardless of the statewide results.
"Every vote in this country should have equal weight. The Electoral College is a relic of a bygone era, and we need to change this system," said Connecticut state Sen. Mae Flexer, who filed a bill with several fellow Democrats requiring Connecticut to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
Since 2006, 11 states have signed onto the compact, which require their Electoral College voters to cast ballots for the national popular vote winner. In theory it would take effect once it involves states representing at least 270 electoral votes, the threshold to win the presidency.

All ballots are counted. I wish you would quit spreading this pernicious myth.
What a frickin’ SCREAM it would be, to see Trump win the popular vote in ‘20, and have CA and NY and the other liberal enclave states have to cast their EC votes for him! THAT’S EnterTAINment!!!
Unless the Constitution is amended, they can’t work around the Electoral College. The only time the Democrats cry and bitch is when they can’t steal an election.
“In states including Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Ohio and New Mexico...”
New Mexico? NM will become totally irrelevant if it does this. Those folks been chewing on those peyote buds way too much....
You are right...I am not a lawyer, but I have heard from conservative lawyers about state compacts for some time, and that they are a Constitutional permissible method.
Correct. If I become another voter for a bunch of California fags or illegal aliens then I want out. How hard is that to comprehend? We vote for our state in the United States of America not the federL majority’ of the northern hemisphere. I really do wish we could vote 7 states off the the flag.
The distribution of Congressional seats in Pennsylvania seems remarkable similar to that in Georgia. There is a defacto alliance in the state legislature to draw up districts in which there are three safe districts for black Democrats and eight safe districts for white Republicans.
In the United States of America, an interstate compact is an agreement between two or more states. Article I, Section 10 of the United States Constitution provides that "No State shall, without the Consent of Congress... enter into any Agreement or Compact with another State."
I stand corrected. Thanks for the direct pointer!
Give the reigns to The islamicrat Party; keith ellison, Enemy islamist in Chief.
It’s time for a national voter ID card - fingerprint, iris scan and DNA record, with a tie to a SS number. The database should be updated with USPS records and national death records. When some New Yorker winters in FL, they can’t vote absentee in NY and by ballot in FL. The same with out of state college students voting absentee back home and by ballot at school. No more illegals in NY, CA and every other democrat state that issues drivers licenses to illegals, voting in any election. Once voters are Americans only voting once, can we begin to think about demolishing the last protection from democrat control.
Is Connecticut trying to say that they are not adequately represented in Congress?
Because the Electoral College is based on the same system. One Elector per House of Representatives for the population of the state, plus 2, one for Each Senator in the Senate. Each is assigned based on population which is determined every 10 years. This is the Constitution of the United States, and without a Constitutional change, the state can’t change the Electoral College.
The changes that they can make are limited.
If the states wish to change things, then they must do away with major political parties so that each presidential contender has as much chance to win in that state as any other.
The People have decided that if a contestant isn’t a Republican or Democrat, then there is no chance of anybody else winning anything.
I think this year however, was a turning point in that philosophy so future elections just might see some changes as people look at other contestants
The true problem however, is that people are not taught in school how our government works, and they depend on the MSM tell them how to react to circumstances.
People aren’t taught that the purpose of the Electoral college is to PREVENT democracy....ie “Mob Rule’’. That’s why it’s modeled on the same course as our Representatives and in accordance with population.
The idea is that the People have say in government as opposed to being ruled by a democrat ruling class.. Such a ruling class has been the foundation of despotism and oppression.
No wonder the democrats have worked so hard to eliminate History and replace it with ‘’social studies”.
They depend on ignorance in order to oppress, and their philosophies most likely are the foundation of illiteracy...Why Jonny can’t read.
If the people of Connecticut want illiteracy for themselves and their children, then fine. Let them have it. Some folks need to learn the hard way..
I don’t know how they COULD have a lawsuit...the Constitution expressly gives the individual states the right to determine HOW their electoral votes are awarded.
I just can’t imagine a state being so STUPID as to depend upon OTHER states to get to decide HOW they’re determined...that is just ignorant.
Put it this way: You have your own money to decide WHERE you buy your groceries. You want to buy your groceries at the A&P. But your neighborhood takes a vote and decides Piggly Wiggly is better, by a vote of 8 to 1. So you decide that NOW you will only shop at Piggly Wiggly because your NEIGHBORS think Piggly Wiggly is better.
Same thing: these states are deciding to let the other states decide WHICH nominee to support, not what the CITIZENS of their state decide.
Beyond ignorant, it is insanity.
If those states wish to give their electoral “right” to California, have at it.
I don’t believe there is any requirement in the constitution that says how the electors are chosen.
Not a direct answer to your question, but a caller to Rush a couple days ago had something interesting.
The caller seemed very informed about the numbers of votes and other voting information.
He said if New York City and LA County votes were excluded Trump won the popular count by 100,000 votes.
I can’t disagree with a thing you said. Very well put.......;)
Don’t sign on to that one county one elector idea.
It would mirror the popular vote.
It’s one elector per congressional district and it needs to remain that.
Those districts don’t line up with counties, I don’t believe.
They are some of the strangest boundaries, but they have to do with populace, and not county lines.
Each Congressional district has very close to the same population count in it.
LOL
Thank you.
