US abstains in key Israel vote, clearing way for condemnation of settlements

A "shameful" abstention by the U.S. in a United Nations Security Council vote Friday allowed passage of a resolution condemning Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank.

The resolution was put forward by New Zealand, Malaysia, Venezuela and Senegal after Egypt withdrew it Thursday under pressure from Israel and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

It was adopted with 14 votes in favor, to a round of applause, after U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power abstained. It is the first resolution the Security Council has adopted on Israel and the Palestinians in nearly eight years.

Reaction from U.S. Republicans and Jewish leaders around the world was swift and sharp.

"This is absolutely shameful," said House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis. "Today's vote is a blow to peace that sets a dangerous precedent for further diplomatic efforts to isolate and demonize Israel."

The Obama White House, under heavy pressure from the Israeli government and its supporters to veto the resolution, kept everyone guessing until the vote whether it would stop shielding Israel from council resolutions and permit it to pass by abstaining.

“What the hell is up with New Zealand? Is that country infested with libtards or muslims?”

Secular atheists. They don’t place any value on Israel the way most Christians do.

President elect Trump had picked South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley to be his ambassador to the United Nations, weeks ago.

Guilt and lack of moral center aside from so called improving the world as a salvation legacy

It’s here and now humanism plus a big dose of providence

The bible warns how some will wander and continuously pay a price

But to be fair this is mostly a Fabian thing

Old school Jews from my historical area were just like us prior to the Federal invasion

Eastern European Jews much like Eastern and northern Europeans in general in the big migrant waves here were not subscribers to the romantic notion of our founding and heritage even if they loved American opportunity they still leaned more statist

I heard Newt talking about this on Jonathon Gilliam just this week

Those migrant waves changed America more than any other

I don’t follow every political wrinkle. Actually kind of bores me. I’m usually about the big picture (getting the feds cut by 70%-80%+, getting states to assert their constitutional sovereignty, helping people awaken to their Constitution, etc.). I usually deal with the somewhat collateral details like this one when they come up as an issue.

"The resolution was put forward by New Zealand, Malaysia, Venezuela and Senegal"

New Zealand is in bad company. I expected better of them. They betray Western Civilization.

"I wonder what the consequences will be for New Zealand, Malaysia, Venezuela and Senegal, not to mention Samantha Powers and Barack Hussein Obama."

They may have eternal consequences. They are all Muslim or Communist or both; except, I thought, for New Zealand.

Who cares. It’s the U.N. Tell me what power she’ll actually have? Israel will not abide by this and the U.N will try to do something about it and it will be veto’d by Trump (no matter WHO is the U.S ambassador). The U.N is a joke of an organization.
