On diversity in news staff: In 1967 when I started working at the CBS television station in Columbus, OH, the entire news staff were white men.
The only thing that accounts for this, I think, is that whites get an early start in writing on demand, even if it's at their college newspaper. By the time I got to CBS, I'd had three years as a free-lancer, and two as a staff radio writer.
