Few people have looked at this from Russia’s POV.
Obama thought he was pulling a fast one on Russia when he used the US State Department, social media ( facebook, google and twitter) to community organize Arab Spring in tandem with the Muslim Brotherhood.) Arab Spring failed in Libya, and when it did, Obama destroyed Libya, reducing Tripoli to rubble, and destroyed the Great Man Made River Project ( touted by the Dutch as the 8th Wonder of the World)which was greening the Southern desert, tantamount to genocide by removing water form the lives of a million people.
The Arab Spring attempt in Egypt failed as it did all over, but enough destruction occurred to create a massive population displacement throughout the ME, with the greater part of these Arab Spring refugees aimed at Europe through Obama created demographic warfare.
Putin saw Obama coming, and in order to secure Russia from any influx of refugees, he annexed Crimea and Eastern Ukraine and sealed the borders to any refugees from the Levant and beyond, making the demographic warfare arrow stick directly into the heart of Westren Europe.Can Putin be entirely blamed for acting to defend Russia from Obama’s cr4eated Islamic demographic invasion of Europe?
Additionally Putin took the battle to Syria to make it clear that no influx of Muslim “immigrants” would be allowed into Eastern Europe. And Now Putin will take on Turkey, which had been so much a grand highway for Muslin refugees to depart Northern Iraq and Syria to Western Europe.
Putin will NOW insist that no further refugees be allowed to pass through Turkey to threaten to destabilize Eastern Europe.And if Turkey refuses? There will be hell to pay.
Donald Trump wants camps or relocation cities set up for the refugees, paid for by the Arab Sates, who supported and funded the Wahhabi extremists who worked to advance Obama’s Arab Spring. Just as Putin does not want an influx of Muslims to Russia, so Trump does not want them in the USA, the people have spoken. We shall see whether Putin and TRump will work together to decrease the demographic warfare Islamic threat.
Western Europe is now sorely pressed with Obama created demographic warfare. The EU may not survive because of the Arab Spring, nor may NATO itself survive its misuse and abuse by Obama.

Don't beleive the "it's becasue he's a despot" line. That has never stopped us from supporting tin pot dictators, or at least turning a blind eye towards them. The debacle in Syria most likely has more to do with a proposed pipeline than with killer heads of state. Said pipeline, proposed and funded by the Gulf states, led by the House of Saud would run from the ME to the Med that would enable the EU to rely less on Russia for energy resources. Our government wants that, in order to poke a stick in Putin's eye. The Russians don't want that for obvious reasons. just follow the money.
The same can be said about Quaddafi, since he was brought up on another response to your question. He was leading the push for an alternative to the French franc as the currency of trade in the old Francophile Africa countries. France and the EU couldn't have that, and our government, in it's effort to push their Arab Spring movement jumped in on their side. It all ended up with a cackled "We came, we saw, and we killed him" and a failed state in Lybia.
