A dam is on the verge of collapse and just a partial breach could create a wave 82ft high, experts have warned.
The Mosul dam is slowly sinking, sparking fears that 7 million lives are at risk if it breaks.
Even if just 26 per cent of the dam collapsed there would be floods on a catastrophic scale with the equivalent of 4,400 Olympic-sized swimming pools gushing down stream.
It would hit Mosul at 82ft high 100 minutes after breaching the wall and then three and a half days later it would destroy Baghdad with a 26ft wave.
Cities, towns, villages and farmland along 434 miles of the River Tigris would be flooded, according to the European Commission's Science Centre.
The dam is 37 miles away from Mosul where Iraqi forces are currently battling with Isis.
It has been put under the protection of Italian soldiers and Kurdish troops for the last 18 months while engineers have been working on saving the dam.

Sorry if it happens, but if it does we have lots of replacement moose limbs on hand.
not one us dime to fix it!
“The water would spread out....
Exactly what I told my g-kids when Gore was howling that the glaciers would melt and drown the cities.
I pointed out that there wasn’t any thing to back the water up that deep and illustrated by setting an ice cube on the table.
A dam broke in canyon country above Los Angeles in the 1920’s and destroyed towns all the way to the sea. The destruction is amazing.
Part of the reason Egypt no longer antagonize Israel since the Azwan dam was built. One bunker buster in the face of the dam, no Egypt.
It does sound a bit biblical.
Sounds like Gods’ way of flushing out some people. Much more refined and selective than Noahs flood.
Umm - what’s a cubit?
4,400 Olympic-sized swimming pools

How many football-field-stories is that?
Fake Science.
But just in case, could the US send a few billion over to help plug the hole?
Not our damned problem!
The Azwan High dam was built from earth and rock.
130 feet across (thick) the top.
An old rule of thumb, one pound of H.E.,to move one pound of earth.
And that requires proper placement.
Going to take a bit more than a ‘daisy cutter’.
If the dam is unstable then have a controlled release to lower the water level behind it. Why do I have to point out the obvious?
Mohammed don’t surf! ...
OMG! Don’t mention the dog’s name or the code word for success!
Not our dam problem. :)
This was discussed in depth here on FR about a year ago when the coalition was sending in troops to keep ISIS from blowing it up.
It would likely cause massive destruction downstream if it failed, which also seems likely. The dam is built on soft rock that is being quickly eroded away. To compound that, the sluice gates are frozen shut, so the reservoir can’t be drained slowly.
This is a bad situation, and thousands could die when the dam fails.
No need to be callous about it.
The sluice gates are frozen shut.
When the levee breaks, mama you got to move.
How long can you tread water?
Consider the effect of even one of Israel’s smaller nukes against the Aswan dam
“...ice cube on the table.”
Simple and effective, I’m using that for when the school scares my kid!
