BAKERSFIELD, Calif.
We are learning more about the man accused of killing a woman and baby Saturday -- and their relationship. The coroner has not released the victims names, but family members tell us they are Katrina Rivera and her newborn baby.
The sheriff's department released this photo Friday of Rivera, who was 9 months pregnant at the time, and her boyfriend, Manuel Vela, 28. Officials said she was at risk and missing under suspicious circumstances.
Family members held a vigil Saturday night for Rivera and her baby. Candles lined the street near East Bakersfield High School, where law enforcement officers were able to apprehend Vela after a slow-speed chase.
We spoke with her cousin who says the family is in shock. Yvette Monroe said, "She was a beautiful person. a loving heart, a caring person. she made it a point to make people laugh. she was compassionate. she was caring. she loved her family. she loved her children. she was excited about having her son."
What idiot judge let him out?!
I guess his girlfriend having a kid interfered with his child-free lifestyle.
He got what he wanted.
They all get out in California. There are no longer any consequences here.
@@ UNDOCUMENTED DEMOCRAT @@
Tell me. We fled SoCal in 2015 and moved to E Tennessee.
Best thing we ever did.
Thought the baby wasn’t his?
Don’t know. Probably wasn’t if he just got out of prison.
Ooh, ohh, waving hand wildly! Lemme guess! Aside from him being a gang member (Los Zetas, Latin Kings or Mexican Mafia, etc.) and a long rap sheet, he's illegal so the LEOs don't want the public coming down on their case for him continuing to be in the country. I'm right, huh. Yep, thought so. Not hard to figure that out. Trump was right, again.
Absolutely true. My neighbor was convicted for selling heroin about two years ago. The cops told me he was the most prolific dealer in our city, which is in LA county. The judge gave him an eight year suspended sentence, since he probably didn’t consider the guy’s twenty three (23) previous convictions to be a predictor of potential future criminal activity. Oh, and did I forget to mention, he lives across the street from a middle school? He was back in about 3-4 months, and back to selling in about six. I put up an internet camera and gave the cops the password, he is gone again, but not for long.
May the Lord have pity on her and her murdered baby, free her from all burdens of sin and sorrow, and make her safe in His Kingdom.
As for Vela: I pray a just judgment.

These family members of DV victims do the entire society a disservice by failing to mention, in addition to any and all good qualities, their deceased loved one was also stupid.
It is not possible to live with a psychopath and not know it. Nor, a violent sociopath.
And her murder was most certainly not the first time she suffered violence at his hand.
True. You would think gang member means stay away.
When her disappearance was first reported the other night, and that they were looking for him, all her family members were on FB stating...oh no, he wouldn’t/couldn’t have anything to do with her disappearance. He wouldn’t do anything like that.
Guess they have a different story now.
In all cases where the victim has family, the family is also complicit in the murder, if for no other reason than enablement and lack of intervention.
We need to hold the lawyers and the judges to this reckless decision making process. 2 year sentence and he’s out in 170 days on good behavior
170 of a 2 year sentence is about the norm here. The jails are so overcrowded they are looking for ways to let them out super early.
Somewhat belated welcome to TN. I’m in Knoxville, where are you?
On the border Knoxville/Farragut!
There are lots of Freepers moving to East Tennessee.
