If you do research and read original historical documents you will find that spelling in an unconventional manner is fairly common. I don’t attribute the recorder of sworn testimony to the Virginia commission of 1775 investigating real estate scams spelling differences to ignorance.

Spelling is merely convention agreed on by English teachers to have power over students. Dictionaries gave “preferred” but not absolute spellings

Give Trump a break

Thanks for these thoughts bert, and yes, I will give Trump a break. He needs it a lot less than I, so will formally request a “break” for myself. ;-)

That's because spelling standards hadn't been established yet. They didn't even have their Effs (ff) and Esses (ss) figured out yet.

Spelling is merely convention agreed on by English teachers to have power over students.

True, but it depends on whether those "English teachers" are teaching "The Kings English" or "American English".

Then there's the issue of the power-texting millennial-morons, who couldn't spell their way out of a wet paper bag.
