Trump’s pick as labor secretary said: Legalizing immigrants is ‘the right thing to do’

Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Labor strongly defended immigration reform in remarks several years ago and also criticized border security as a waste of money and overly intrusive — positions that put him at odds with the president-elect’s campaign promises to crack down on immigration.

Andrew Puzder, CEO of the fast-food chain conglomerate CKE Restaurants, said that passing immigration reform that offered a path to legalization for many of the millions of undocumented immigrants in the country was “the right thing to do” and would boost the economy, in a question-and-answer session organized by conservative think tank the American Enterprise Institute in 2013.

Puzder’s belief that immigration reform could be an economic boon was once firmly implanted in the Republican mainstream, with Republicans willing to join a bipartisan effort to pass comprehensive immigration reform as recently as 2013. But the victory of Trump, who campaigned on building a giant wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and said that Mexico has sent “rapists” to the United States, demonstrated that the Republican base rejects that thinking.

“If we had immigration reform and were able to hire these people who really want to work, we’d have a more diverse, incentivized and productive workforce,” Puzder said in 2013. “You’d really reinforce this idea that the United States is the land of opportunity, the land of entrepreneurial vision — and that could use some reinforcing.”

Puzder said that his fast-food chain’s workforce in California, where a greater share of employees were Latino, was more productive and motivated than some of his employees in other areas of the country.

“Remind me again what influence the Labor Secretary has on immigration policy and enforcing the border. I’ll wait patiently...” <-——What he said.

No worries. I am optimistic each and every time I hear Trump speak. The media, however, will pick apart every word trying to tear him down and make us waver.

This is a wrong pick for a lot of reasons.

I haven’t been too critical of Trump since the election. But this appointment is a big disappointment.

Yes, that was some of the best analysis I have heard from Rush in a long while.

Laura Ingraham on tonight’s Fox Special Report confounded “immigrants” and “illegal immigrants” in describing the Labor Secretary designate as someone who conservatives might find problematic because he hired “immigrants” to work at Hardee’s and Carl Jr.’s.

I don’t care for Hardee’s burgers. But I’ve never heard of this guy before. Nor have I ever heard much out of a labor secretary before. It would be nice, though, if someone would get rid of their lousy statistics.

And?????

The Labor Secretary has nothing to do with making immigration decisions.

I see that some of the concern trolls have already weighed in so at least I know they are still alive and concerned.

Concern is the first sign of consternation.

The question was asked what does this have to do with immigration decisions?

Dept. of Labor's responsibility [for immigration matters] mainly is "guestworkers" [who often become illegal aliens with 'overstays'] that undermine the bargaining power of American workers – H1-Bs for the tech industry, H-2As for agriculture, H-2Bs for non-ag cheap-labor employers, and more.. DoL is where you start the process of importing guest workers. You can't get a VISA until after you've been approved by DoL.

In addition, prior to the Obama administration, Labor Department inspectors were a force multiplier for immigration regarding worksite enforcement – coordinating with ICE (and before that, INS) on worksite problems the immigration people weren’t aware of.

Regarding Puzder, he was one of the nation’s most outspoken business voices for Gang of Eight-style immigration policies. This op-ed in Politico [link below], timed to coincide with the launch of the Gang of Eight effort in 2013, could have been written by Jeb Bush. Puzder partnered with Grover Norquist in an effort to “push 2016 presidential candidates and congressional Republican leaders to support immigration expansion policies this year. He is a former Romney economic campaign advisor.

How you enforce those 'guestworker' limits is the issue. Concerns arise whether Gang-of-8 bill supporter Puzder, who advocated for amnesty and more importation of foreign labor [2013], is aligned with Trumps Americans First views based on his past comments and would be strict in issuing and/or limiting guest worker VISA's...

Trump has said he will put an end to illegal immigration. I will hold him to it.

Concern is the first sign of consternation.

LOL! It would be nice if it involved discernment.
