Donald Trump is tapping Gen. John Kelly to run the Department of Homeland Security, CBS News confirms.
The final request and acceptance, sources told CBS’ Major Garrett, occurred while Kelly was traveling in Europe. His pick for DHS secretary will be announced by the transition staff in the coming days.
Kelly is the third general tapped by the president-elect, joining Gen. James Mattis, Mr. Trump’s pick to become the next secretary of Defense, and Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, Mr. Trump’s incoming national security advisor.
Like Mattis, Kelly is a Marine with a reputation for bluntness.

He would have more power as Deputy DHS.
One of my good friends is a retired Air Force colonel and he still has many friends in the Pentagon, where he worked for a few years. He knows many of the top brass. He says Patreaus gets the credit for the surge, but it was really Gen Jack Keane’s idea. Keane is a brilliant military mind, well respected by everyone. He would make a great Sec of State.
Keane is an old Vietnam veteran, and he simply applied what was done in Vietnam to cordon, cleanse, control a Viet village or area.
I don’t know who did that first in Vietnam.

That’s probably true. Either way, he should definitely be in the DHS mix. And ICE needs to get real, real busy and drop this effing illegal alien protection racket that Bush and Obama have created.

I asked him specifically about deporting visa overstays when he spoke a number of years ago to our grassroots immigration organization in VA. He is big on building fences, but not so big on interior enforcement and deportation. And he was not in favor of reducing legal immigration.
The son, Mike Flynn, Jr., has “tweeted” stuff about the “Pizzagate” ... whether it’s false info or not I have no idea, but this is regarding the SON not the father. It is Mike Flynn, Sr. who is the incoming National Security Advisor and that has not changed.
The son was apparently on the transition team and he posted a tweet saying #pizzagate is far from over, and for that he got canned. Some of the more conspiracy-oriented minds think that the Trump administration know that the #pizzagate information can be used to hold the entire government by the short hairs so they don’t want it to come out because they want to use it.
I’ve talked to him many dozens of times in person and on the phone. He accepted no amount of illegal immigration, VISA overstays or border border jumpers or “long time” illegals. He and Tancredo were the only one in 2008 that did not equivocate on sending all illegals home - genuine NO AMNESTY. I can dig up many quotes.
His 1st priority was and is securing the border, because, as he argued many times, it doesn’t do much good to deport Mexicans and S. Americans if they can turn around and re-enter with ease...as they do this very minute.
But if you look at HIS legislation which he either sponsored or co-sponsored, it is clear that all illegals needed to go. None of this we’ll secure the border then decide what to do with them later crap.
