One of the websites The Washington Post labeled fake news in a November story demanded a retraction and threatened the paper with a defamation lawsuit in a demand letter Sunday.
A lawyer for Naked Capitalism accuses WaPo of running a debunked list of fake news sites in the sensational story compiled by a dubious team of researchers, without substantiating their claims or giving Naked Capitalism a chance to respond to the allegation. The Washington Posts actions constitute defamation, the lawyer writes in the letter published Monday.
You did not provide even a single example of fake news allegedly distributed or promoted by Naked Capitalism or indeed any of the 200 sites on the PropOrNot blacklist, James A. Moody writes. You provided no discussion or assessment of the credentials or backgrounds of these so-called researchers (Clint Watts, Andrew Weisburd, and J.M. Berger and the team at PropOrNot), and no discussion or analysis of the methodology, protocol or algorithms such researchers may or may not have followed.
Naked Capitalism is a finance and economics blog started in December 2006, with a stated goal of shedding light on the dark and seamy corners of finance.
Moody demands a retraction of the story and a public apology from WaPo in the letter, threatening a suit if the paper does not comply. He lists a series of damages to the site itself, as well as the writers and editors associated with the site; these include ridicule, emotional distress, loss of reputation, and risk to future career advancement for writers and editors.
Other mainstream news outlets criticize The Washington Post for running the story.
The organizations anonymity, which a spokesperson maintained was due to fear of Russian hackers, added a cybersexy mystique, Adrian Chen wrote in The New Yorker regarding the WaPo story. But a close look at the report showed that it was a mess.
And Patrick Maines criticized the story in The Hill, calling it perhaps the shoddiest piece of feature writing since Rolling Stone published its blatantly false story about a campus rape at the University of Virginia.
You have made damaging false accusations against Naked Capitalism, Moody concludes in the letter. Please immediately remove these from the web and provide an equivalent opportunity to respond. Please see the attached concerning your obligation to retain documents and electronically stored information relating to Fake News. I look forward to hearing from you within three business days.
He’s been pretty quiet, hasn’t he? Disappeared yet, I wonder?
And here I thought you were responsible for that, lol!
A demand letter lists the demands of the complainant and gives the other side so much time to meet those demands. They are placed on notice that the lawsuit will follow if those demands are not met or some other compromise isn't agreed to.
We used to call it the 10-day letter when I was in the corporate world.
Tell us more about the fakery of the Podesta emails.
Have you seen the emails?
Have you seen the art in the Tony Podesta home?
Have you seen the Satanic ritual dinner, with photos, and Hollywood attendees and famous DC others?
Because something is not being covered by Walter Conkite, but dismissed and mocked instead, then it is not true?
No, there isn't. Because it doesn't take more than a few minutes to see that it's silly. And then, you just look silly.
I wont go into details, but there are certain and undeniable facts about the Podestas, James Alefantis, David Brock and many others that really should be investigated.
If you really believe that, call the FBI. See how far you get before they escort you to the door.
At one time Watergate was a silly conspiracy theory and Ken Starr was a clown out on a fools errand.
Watergate started with a burglary. And Ken Starr was appointed to continue an investigation already in progress (Whitewater). In both cases, there was evidence of actual crimes.
Pizzagate has yet to yield one single crime, or even one single alleged victim. Amateur "investigators" try to convince you otherwise by claiming unrelated crimes are related -- again with no evidence.
Rita, we have 2 or 3 anti-pizzagate fanatics here. They will even troll you from thread to thread. I don’t know why. We’ve had theories here for years - some of which have been true, some that our false but have never raised an eyebrow among people of differing opinions.
My feeling? Anything that casts doubt on the likes of John Podesta and the motley Clinton crew - after all, they who accused the president-elect of being a cocaine addict - deserve everything thrown at them. And when did you ever see a post from an anti-pizzagate nut screaming about Howard Dean accusing Mr. Trump of being a cocaine addict?
Our = are.
At one time, Birthers were mocked and ridiculed. But because of Donald Trump and others - we suddenly were provided with a long form birth certificate. A certificate that Obama had said for years did not exist.
Conservatives should keep up the pressure for further investigations into Pizzagate. If for no other reason than to drive the liberals in the media crazy with their stompy foot denials.
If you have evidence of a crime, or evidence of a victim -- show it, or at least report it to the FBI.
But, you don't have any of those things, do you?
I'm not obliged to prove you have don't have anything. Its absence is all the proof that is needed.
So, you have nothing. Let me repeat that:
If that's what you want, then you would have been a great Stasi informer in the former East Germany.
Thanks for the explanation. Let’s watch this!
You’re a bit of a bully, aren’t you? I’m pretty sick of you antis. You’ve scared off some very smart people with your bullying. Why don’t you give it a rest?
He taunts us with daring us to call the FBI, if we’re so sure.
Is this the same FBI that has looked the other way regarding Hillary’s emails? The same FBI that has it’s Director James Comey having direct ties to the Clinton Crime Foundation? The same FBI that has Andrew McCabe and his wife taking a half million in bucks? The same FBI headed by the DOJ with Loretta Lynch who met with Bill Clinton on the tarmac in Phoenix?
CNN was blasting about the "fake" news story about the pizza place....
NOW I KNOW IT ALL MUST BE TRUE.....
me thinks they doth protest too much...
Unless the owners of this site ban people from putting up their theories and links to their theories, there is no reason to back off posting. We shouldn’t give in to the bullies here. They have no more right to post than we do. If the owners decide that this theory should not go forward that is another story and we should all abide by it. But I’ll be damned if two or three bullying posters are going to stop me from expressing my opinion or receiving links to various pizzagate sites.
And here's what the conspiracy theorists are saying the logo is:
If Besta Pizza changed its logo to make it look less like the pedophile symbol it supports the conspiracy theory.
But if the conspiracy theorists altered the logo to make it look more like their pedophile symbol, it's really bad for the people pushing the theory.
Which is it?
Milo to broadcast on youtube in a few minutes (7 PM, East Coast) on pizzagate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAYYdRvIkR0

Looks like in 9/2014 it was the second one.
I do wonder, though. Is the logo supposed to be a signal to other pedophiles? A sign of pedophile pride?
Wouldn't pedophiles want to avoid too much visibility? A street with three pedophile businesses and plenty of pedophiles circulating would attract a lot of police interest, wouldn't it?
