The operator of the converted warehouse in Oakland, Calif., where a fire broke out during a dance party on Friday night, killing at least 30 people, has been widely criticized over his initial response to the tragedy.
Everything I worked so hard for is gone, Derick Ion Almena wrote in a Facebook post early Saturday morning. Blessed that my children and Micah were at a hotel safe and sound its as if I have awoken from a dream filled with opulence and hope to be standing now in poverty of self worth.
Almenas post was met with immediate backlash from Facebook users for omitting any mention of the victims.
Not one mention of the people burned to death in your death trap building, one wrote. You are a real piece of work.
All you worked on? What about those who have died? wrote another. I lost two very close and dear friends in the fire and all you seem to care about is whatever material stuff you owned, which can be replaced unless the lives your death trap has taken.

Could be but I think he’s still in shock. His vision is too narrow right now. When it hits home about the loss of life who knows? Just saying. I’m not defending him.
I’m not defending him I’m just looking at him from a medical viewpoint.
From what another poster remarked, he’s a piece of work.
Husband and the missus?
Lee and Pelosi are two peas in the same pod. If Nancy stops short, Barbara has a good chance to end up with a broken nose. Or at least a stinky one.
You should read more about Ion.
He was a sh!thead before the fire.
Lots of crank, satanic art, a few followers, a wannabe cult leader.
No, it was an artists collective that had a second floor built in what was a one story warehouse with a high ceiling. The interior was crammed with art works, and while visually interesting looked like a firetrap. The people who ran the facility hosted parties, some have said to raise money.
It is a very sad situation, apparently the people who built the interior did not think about how dangerous it was to have a lot of people at a concert/party in that environment without sprinklers or fire exits.
You can see the interior here www.oaklandghostship.com/
Getting a lot of info on the guy and thanks for your input.
It wasn’t a “home.” It was a warehouse that was being illegally operated as a residential/commercial venture in violation of a plethora of city, county and state laws. So for my “home” that is a legally permitted residential structure...no. But a place that is essentially an illegal apartment/condo/commune, then yes. The city, county and state has laws against this very thing to protect the public. They were derelict in that duty. 30 plus people died horrible deaths.
The attitude expressed in your post is apparently the attitude of city officials. Now the blood of over 30 souls is on their hands. Heads should roll.
I'm not so sure. Given his disdain for government regulation, he could be an Ayn Rand follower.
Artists in general tend to be rather cluttery and pile up
a lot of flammable materials. FANG’S aunt is an OLD
artist who hoarded everything with a very packed attic.
She is a very STRONG (I GUESS) personality and has seemed to
go out of her way to be destructive and accusatory of FANG
with no real cause. We don’t visit there any more; it is
just too much of a hardship on us and stressful. - When
FANG was in college, she gave him permission to go into
their attic and get a little furniture for his dorm room
He accepted gratefully and cleaned up a lamp and a
bookcase. When she saw his room; she hit the roof and
wrote his mother a LONG letter just accusing him of
stealing her stuff and ranting and raving. He kept the
letter a long time; but I reckon he finally threw it away.
In later years, her kid launched into a similar behavior
with FANG. I’ll help anybody I can; but with them I think
I’m done and will hit the roof if FANG accepts another
material thing from that corner. (I think she just saw the
few things he “took” (with her permission) and then decided
they were really too “nice” to give away after all.
I saw a story, one person is being hailed a hero because he stood by the exit and told some of the folks where the exit was.
It’d be pretty dreary just running around and not being able to find that blasted exit. How sad.
Surely, criminal penalties will pertain to him beyond civil.
No permits, sprinklers or fire alarms, this guys troubles are just starting.Where are the resident pinheads now who shout "permits/government be damned, a person should be able to do what s/he wants with their property"?
Because everyone deals with trauma the same way.
In 2003 the 105-year-old On Lock Sams restaurant on Sutter Street in Downtown Stockton closed its doors after an Oakland man claimed he was humiliated because he was unable to navigate his wheelchair into the eaterys bathroom. The suit claimed that the man, Charles Hager, soiled himself as a result and hired an Oakland attorney to represent him in the suit.-----
The lawyer that represented Hager, Paul Rein, had become infamous when he unsuccessfully sought $577,000 from actor Clint Eastwood because his Mission Ranch Hotel and Restaurant which had wheelchair ramps, handicapped parking and a handicapped accessible suite didnt comply with the ADA.
The staircase [which probably caused a lot of people not to exit] had no bannister, was at a 90 degree angle, was made out of little slats of wood so that the “steps” were only 1 inch deep ... and supposedly was built into the wall.
I’m having a hard time believing the last issue].
The kept on blabbing ... the wife immediately said she needed a lawyer.
If this doesn’t scare some scruples into this couple, nothing will.
I’m not current in the SFBA. I’m hearing that ‘the Club’ is looking for him, because he ‘killed one of their own’.
Do you know what this refers to? Sounds a bit mobby.
Don’t be surprised if both “Bonnie and Clyde” up and leave town. They may remember some urgent business that needs doing at an undisclosed location.
