President-elect Donald Trump on Friday broke with decades of U.S. diplomatic tradition in speaking with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, a seemingly innocuous call that started the relationship between two of the world's greatest powers on the wrong foot.
Trump's call, and the ensuing debate over its meaning, created an initial furor on both sides of the Pacific. Tsai's Democratic Progressive Party makes Beijing uncomfortable because of its official stance that Taiwan is independent and sovereign, rather than an extension of mainland Chinathe government's position that underpins the "One China" policy.
Yet foreign policy experts think the fallout on U.S.-Sino relations will be limited. Beijing is likely to attribute the move to inexperience even as elements of the U.S.-Taiwan call were unorthodox in more ways than one.

It wasn’t a call TO Taiwan, it was a call FROM Taiwan.
Reminds me that some people don’t the difference between “take” and “bring”.
China Policy
“During Jimmy Carters presidency, the most dramatic moment in Sino-American relations occurred on December 15, 1978, when, following months of secret negotiations, the United States and the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) announced that they would recognize one another and establish official diplomatic relations. As part of the agreement, the United States recognized the Government of the Peoples Republic of China as the sole legal government of China, and declared it would withdraw diplomatic recognition from Taiwan (also known as the Republic of China [ROC]).

However President Reagan interacted with the following:
The “Six Assurances” to Taiwan \
1. The United States would not set a date for termination of arms sales to Taiwan.
2. The United States would not alter the terms of the Taiwan Relations Act.
3. The United States would not consult with China in advance before making decisions about U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.
4. The United States would not mediate between Taiwan and China.
5. The United States would not alter its position about the sovereignty of Taiwan which was, that the question was one to be decided peacefully by the Chinese themselves, and would not pressure Taiwan to enter into negotiations with China.
6. The United States would not formally recognize Chinese sovereignty over Taiwan.

As a U S citizen the telephone call from Taiwan doesn’t seem to be much. PRC a little bit jumpy? Trump position is that they take advantage of us.We will see what develops?
I don’t remember China doing anything we tell them to do...Like stop building islands. Screw em.
“The only group of people int he world who ACT more offended than liberal progressives when you dont do EXACTLY as they demand and script are the officials of the Chinese government....”
Well, there’s Muslims.
Why is everyone so terrified of China? Ridiculous. They have FAR, FAR more to lose than do we.
[Taiwan called Trump....LOL...Again, the media lies!!!!!] Right on.!!
This is what passes for Journalism today, just throw some words out there and then as the biggest 2 time loser of 2016 said “At this point, what difference does it make?”
“Trump’s detractors are so blinded by their belief that he is a buffoon. They never stop to consider that it is they, who are behind the curve.

These reporters don’t even bother to fact check.
They obviously haven't been listening to him as well as Taiwan has - he has called China out and will not let them dictate terms to him. That's what "emboldened Taiwan to call him - mission going as planned.
Since when did we stop,talking to Taiwan? I thought we had some sort of agreement to protect them if they are ever attacked by the Commies?
Fake news! Title proves it!
Guess Ms Wang missed the fact that Trump didn’t make the call, he RECEIVED the call. Speaking with anyone is Trump’s business, he has not yet been sworn in so what’s the big deal. Should he actually DID make a call and spoke about national security issues, that would be a totally different kettle of fish. Get over it crybabies!
Wang, you’re dumb as a bag of rocks. Trump is letting everyone on the planet know that NOBODY is going to tell him who he can or cannot be in contact with regarding matters he believes are relevant to the best interests of this country.

You have this exactly right, and this is why the establishment people are pissing their panties about this matter.
Yet foreign policy experts think . . .
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Just who are these foreign policy “experts”, and who has determined that they are “experts”, and on what basis was that determination made?
The US is importing a lot of things from China.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
A bit of understatement there. I seldom see anything in the stores that is made anywhere else.
Mr Trump isn’t accustomed to being told who he can,or cannot,talk to
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The snowflakes in the news media are dumbfounded that Trump refuses to be dictated to by any of their leftist heroes.
My understanding of the “protocol” is that the established government’s head of state calls the PEOTUS, not the other way around. It’s true in this case that Taiwan’s president called PE Trump.
