BEIJING Chinas leaders have been markedly reticent about what kind of leader they think Donald J. Trump will be. A pragmatic dealmaker, as his business background might indicate? Or a provocateur who tests the ways of statecraft?
By talking on Friday with Taiwans president, Tsai Ing-wen, Mr. Trump answered that question in stark terms, Chinese analysts said Saturday. Breaking decades of American diplomatic practice, he caught the Chinese government off guard by lunging into the most sensitive of its so-called core interests, the One China policy agreed to by President Richard M. Nixon more than four decades ago.
This is a wake-up call for Beijing we should buckle up for a pretty rocky six months or year in the China-U.S. relationship, Wang Dong, an associate professor at the School of International Studies at Peking University, said Saturday. There was a sort of delusion based on overly optimistic ideas about Trump. That should stop.
Chinese leaders covet stability in their relationship with Washington, and perhaps for that reason, they have allowed fairly rosy assessments of Mr. Trump to appear in the state-run news media. Many of those accounts have depicted the president-elect as a practical operator devoid of ideology, the kind of person China might find common ground with despite his threats of a trade war.

Economically America has become China’s plantation.
It’s the same way democrats treat blacks - the more abuse they heap on blacks the more blacks vote for them.
The more China takes advantage of America the more our spineless leaders give them what they want.
It will be a long overdue and welcome change to have a president who wants to represent America and place our well being first.
Finally someone standing up to China. I predict better trade deals with China in the future. GO TRUMP GO
All the leftist media is hyping this as something real bad, as they are going to do as long as Trump is president.
I seem to remember bammy doing something that annoyed China too. Anybody remember exactly what it was?
“”So what if Trump changed a 40-year-old U.S. policy on China. Obama changed a 55-year-old policy on Cuba (and was praised by the NYT).””
That was fast thinking!! Did you have to practice it to acquire it or were you born with it? I, for one think of the appropriate thing to say AFTER the fact and usually after I’ve gone to bed at night. I love it!
Seems the Chinese have been threatening us for quite awhile.
“”the kind of person China might find common ground with despite his threats of a trade war.””
I think they read the “tea leaves” wrong. Do Chinese read tea leaves? It’s not like he didn’t give plenty of heads up for China during the campaign. They should have been able to read between the lines and know he wasn’t coming down on China for just trade deals.
“”I dont know how you are then going to expect China to cooperate on Iran and North Korea and climate change””
I don’t think we should depend on ANY help from ANYONE when it comes to Iran and/or North Korea...and for climate change? LOL!
This is the dumpest article I have read from The New York Times, and that is saying a lot. The Times would have us believe, the guy who ran around the country for over a year promising to rip up treaties and charge fees on Chinese imports and stop American production from going to China was not noticed by China. (And he mentioned China by name in most speeches.) He is someone that the Chinese did not worry about. But this one phone call was just too much. What a load of crap.
China is trying to pick a fight with us. They are trying to take over the sea surrounding all their neighbors and our Navy is the only thing stopping them. But maybe Trump isn’t serious. And China is underestimating him. But are they underestimating the three 4 star generals he has added to his cabinet. Do they think they are also clowns?
China is now and has always been supporting North Korea. If China wanted them gone, they would be gone.
As soon as I see the article comes from the NYTimes or WaPo, I just pass by it and read the next one. NOTHING these people could say can be believed.
“”China is now and has always been supporting North Korea. If China wanted them gone, they would be gone.””
For sure - but the politicos believe OR PRETEND to believe they are sincere. I guess when someone hurls the BS all day every day, it becomes pretty difficult to recognize it when it’s being flung at you..not you but politicos...
Interesting the ChiComs didn’t use one of their favorite buzz words to define what they feel is not good for the ChiComs and re a positive stance for America/Americans.
Xenophobia!
“China Sees New Ambiguity With Donald Trumps Taiwan Call”
No one ever accused China of being stupid.
Ti Nee Dong is Carlos Danger’s name when he’s sexting girls in China.

Ambiguity is good!
LOLOLOLOLOL>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Smart move on the Donald’s part. Time for the Chinese to feel some of the ambiguity about commitments previously made as many businesses feel toward Chinese agreements made with them and then didn’t honor one way or another.
Strengthens our bargaining position when it is time to sit down and discuss trade relations/agreements with China!
Thank ya, thank ya very much. / Elvis
