Yes, Pence was the father of this deal. Trump was the midwife. Pence did what 49 other governors do or try to do. I generally don’t like these kind of deals because the tax revenue benefits rarely exceed the cost to the state of the subsidies or tax breaks. Plus, they create an incentive for every other company in the state to demand some similar concession. But my back-of-the-envelope calculations suggest to me that the Carrier deal might be a good one for the state.
The purpose of the state is to pay off business it wants to keep, pick winners and losers, redistribute wealth etc etc...
