Congress reacts to Trump's 'Mad Dog' Mattis pick
The Washington Examiner ^ | December 1, 2016 | Anna Giaritelli

The Senate Armed Services chair vowed to help move Mattis through the upper chamber's confirmation process. McCain, who will chair Mattis's confirmation hearing, told the Washington Examiner that he would write the bill to grant Mattis a waiver of the seven-year rule.

Not all lawmakers agreed on that Thursday night. Sen. Kristen Gillibrand, D-N.Y., a former Hillary Clinton supporter, said she is against changing that rule in order to accommodate Mattis.

"While I respect Gen Mattis's service, I oppose a waiver-civilian control of our military is a fundamental principle of American democracy," Gillibrand tweeted.

The first meeting between Russian MOD Shoigu and Mattis should be REALLY interesting.

Shoigu isn’t “military” but he’s a “rough Siberian” outdoorsman, who personally formed the “Rescuer Corps”(Think FEMA plus the Coast Guard, now the Ministry of Emergency Situations). He’s a VERY comepetent Administrator, it seems.

The hawk, and the contact for going after ISIS, is going to be Gerasimov, who is both competent and VERY slippery.

They’ll give the waiver. That law will NEVER survive a SCOTUS review.

General George C. Marshall. He didn’t retire from active U.S. Army service until February 1947 and served as Secretary of State until January 1949. In March 1949, he returned to the active list as General of the Army. In September 1950, he became Secretary of Defense. At that time, it was a ten year requirement.

You know, the irony of a Senate Democrat arguing that something can’t be done is astounding. Thanks to Harry Reid, the majority can now run over the minority in most situations like an already flattened squirrel in the road. I would strongly advise the Republicans to give the Democrats back some of their medicine, especially on behalf of a fighter like Mad Dog Mattis.

Mathis military past makes no difference. The control of the military will be under the control of a civilian. Commander in Chief Donald Trump.

I get that. But that is not what she said. Civilian control of the military is the premise of her argument. Mattis is a civilian, ergo, except for the stupid law, he is qualified.

I think Gillibrand is a special kind of stupid.

She thinks New York State could handle 2.2 million more Syrians.

Does a recently retired general need a waiver to run for president? After all, the president is the Commander in Chief and outranks the SecDef.

This is silly.

The statute places what is almost certainly an Unconstitutional restriction upon both the President’s Constitutional authority to nominate, and the Senate’s prerogative of advice and consent. If challenged, it would almost certainly be struck down.

Sure there is: They can’t hold other offices. While I agree with the claim that the statute is Unconstitutional, your statement is a bridge too far.
