The problem is a society of civil peaceful people coming face to face with a barbarian nation from the 7th century. When the expanding Europeans met with the new world natives the advanced societies of Europe were also continually at war and ready to fight to keep or take what they wanted and saw it as legitimate political policy.
Today’s Islamic states are the same today Asian the 7th century and have been continually at war with the west for over 1300 years either overtly or covertly but always at war. The west thinks the war ended in 1100 AD with the last crusader armies wearing armor and riding horses in the Middle East.
