If Romney was purely a technocrat I could buy this argument.
He is not. He is a man with his own political agenda.
One clearly at odds with Trump’s. He cannot be relied upon
to be a team player.
In general ex-CEO’s make crappy team players anyway.
And this one has an axe to grind.
Trump encouraged Conway to trash Romney on TV over the weekend.

“Aw, Mitt. I know you’re disappointed. But after three and a half interviews, I just didn’t think your pro-Liberal-Establishment credentials were a good fit. I’m sure you’ll do well in some future Administration who wants a Lesser America. I’ll be sure to tell everyone in the public how I feel.”
dont trust mittens
he expressed hiself very clearly
he is part of the globalist nwo
DONT KID YOURSELF FOR ONE NANO SECOND
Bolton is the man...
Far as state goes... its always been infiltrated by left wing libtards putting America second...
needs a thorough overhaul...
half the people there are USELESS....
and AMBASSADORSHIPS are given to big contributors .... not qualified for the job...
STATE IS A JOKE...
a corrupt ceptic tank
TRUMP SHOULD WATCH HIS BACK with these “folks”
We want to know what you think.
I am not buying it. Trump is probably following long established precedent. The world thinks that the SoS must be presidential, so Romney is a real choice. Trump is sensitive to us and that is why he is listening to all this. Remember he voted for Romney and said that he thought Romney would be a great president. (ugggghhh... Did I just say that?!)
Trump may want to pacify the Rinos with this, but he ain’t gonna make us mad with it either at the same time.
I am rationalizing it, I know, but the more I think about it...well... I am trusting Trump! If this who he wants, then do it! If he tells us WHY, then I think we’ll get behind it.
Hard to say what is best from the bleachers but trust Trump to make the right decision.
These are troubled times w our foreign policy. i would imagine the clean up job needed there is substantial.
I doubt Mittens would be setting the actual policies but taking direction from other Trump advisors.
That being said, Lifson is a thoughtful commentator, one who deserves listening to, and he makes some good points in his article..
If Trump decides to hire him as SOS, he has had enough time to think this through, and I will trust his instincts in spite of the fact I don't like Romney.
We'll know soon enough.
At the very least, Trump is picking Romney's brain.
I think Lifson makes a good deal of sense when he suggests that the State Department could be marginalized under a Trump administration at least until Romney or someone else can repair and restructure it to bring it in line with Administration thinking.
Romney might be a good candidate for a complete restructuring of State and he might have convinced Trump of that.
As for Kellyanne's rants on Sunday, they might have served several purposes, from testing Romney's mettle to giving vent to internal voices who strongly dislike Rommey.
It might have also been sending a message to Romney that he might have to reach out to those on the transition team who are offended by his selection.
It was always rumored that Trump likes to set up his team in ways that force its members into conflict with the end goal being the production of the widest array of ideas permitting Trump to analyze and ultimately select the best possible outcome or solution.
As much as I dislike Romney, his selection would certainly fit with that strategy.
Romney won't be able to criticize the Trump administration if he is part of it.
A weak leader (Obama) surrounds himself with sycophants.
A strong leader (Trump) will select a powerhouse team.
On the other hand Secretary of State is probably the best place to put him if you are trying to appease the rinos. Getting the rinos to work with him will mean they need protecting or a safe way to retire(think that one through because these guys are compromised when you realize how much they caved to Obama).
Seriously, does anyone remember what came out of MA Legislature / Courts during his tenure of Governor that either he encouraged or didn't stop?
I understand that there may be upsides to picking Romney, and perhapslike the author claimsTrump will really run foreign policy while Romney cleans up the State Dept. But, really, I dont think Romney can be trusted. How do we know he wont be looking out for his own political interests or enabling the establishment instead of draining the swamp?
It would also just be sad if the most prestigious job in the cabinet goes not to a loyalist but to a back-stabber who led the NeverTrump forces (which had no purpose but to help Hillary get elected, so that the NeverTrumpers would be in a better position to take the party back from us).
I would 1st have the author not look at Romney's practices & performance in the business world but in the political world. Not where his jury was a business media and stockholders, but where his jury is an overwhelmingly liberal media and a nearly evenly split public.
Then I would ask him, what in Romney's record as governor of Massachusetts makes him think Romney could clean up a political swamp, like the Dep't of State when he did nothing to clean up Massachusetts?
Romney may have been a corporate tiger but he's definitely been a political pussy!
The thought process is solid but Mitt would be much better used at the VA. Rudy can do SoS just fine. Mitt can tear down the VA just like a Bain Capital restricting. He can have a lasting impact to the veterans of this country that way.
My theory is this ...
GOPe: “We’ll play along with you, Mr. Trump, but only if you give some of us some positions in your cabinet. Otherwise, we will make your term a living hell.”
my first take was he would be a better fit at reorganizing the VA.
but I can see a tremendous amount of change needed in state dept starting with where is the $6bb that disappeared under hildabeast regime.
a second priority might be to turn off the tap on the "millenium challenge corp" slush fund. literally billions of US dollars are floated around the ME & africa with no budget line item appropriated by congress. BILLIONS.
next would be to move out the muslim brotherhood staff from state and all other depts of gummit.
yuge job.
maybe it is a fit for romney's wheel house???
Make him Ambassador to Marotiri
If we insist that all his choices are 100% pure across the board conservatives, then he's gonna have a ton of empty slots. They will either do their boss' bidding or they will be yanked.
T all the concern trolls who haven't already, I suggest they do something useful:
Not in a million years is Romney going to be SOS.
