In the Boy Scouts, I learned you were supposed to burn a US flag which you had allowed to touch the ground.

I recently burned about 50 flags, in public. I invited local media, the mayor and the Fire Department.
We were following the Flag Code and respectfully disposing of unserviceable flags by burning them.
The local news did a great report and treated it with the respect I desired.
That said, burning a US flag in protest is detestable. Instead of jail, I propose that there be a law stating the maximum penalty for beating the snot out of a protester who burns a flag. I propose a $20 fine.

We need to see and know who would burn the flag and take action by boycotting and publically shaming them. Free speech counters free speech.
But the government? No, the government should not take action. This would be totalitarian. We don’t need to go there.
Obviously I disagree but I think Trump suspects that natural leftist reaction to this will be to yell on TV or have a flag burning event. Long term he’ll look good and sound reasonable in contrast

You are allowed to burn the American flag in this country, but don’t ever get caught burning a Rainbow Flag!
I watched a speach by, Scalia where he addressed this very topic as a jurist. It was something to the effect of people who burn the flag suck but nothing in the constitution says you can’t, their you go shut the book and go to bed. Then I think he said something about plastering their face aim over so prospective future employers could get a good look at them
The only problem with that position is the fact that many people fought and died to protect the right to burn the flag.
Congress is not empowered to legislative flag burning.
I want people who take the decision to burn their flag to be able to do so out in the open where I can see who they are.
The reason I wouldn’t burn my flag is that I don't want to, not because it is illegal to do so.
Let them burn their flag out in the open where we can observe them. It is illegal for someone to burn my flag and I intend to see that law strictly enforced. It is also illegal for someone to create public hazard and that should law should also be strictly enforced.
