As police responded to the attack at Ohio State University, school officials blasted an ominous message to students with a set of instructions: Run Hide Fight.
Its a mantra that has become standard at colleges in the event of a campus shooting. Students near the assailant are urged to run somewhere safe, to hide from the shooter and, as a last resort, to fight back.
A training video for students released last year by Ohio State dramatizes a campus shooting, in which actors depicting workers arm themselves with fire extinguishers and phone cords as a shooter enters their office. A police officer narrating the six-minute online video says to fight only as a last resort and until police arrive.
Its scary to think about, an officer says in the video, but an active shooter is something that we all need to be prepared for.

what’s the adage anyhow? flee a blade, but charge a gun? someone who was indignant enough, even with no gun himself might do something the shooter never would expect — charge the shooter, risking getting shot but being a difficult target while in motion. knock the bastard over then call everybody else to pile on while trying to wrest the gun away.
I’m reminded of the somewhat obscure 1985 movie BRAZIL, by Terry Gilliam (from Monty Python).
An average, dull guy, just trying to live his boring life and pursue a woman he has dreamed about, gets caught up in a decadent, corrupt society and the massive police state. when the frequent terrorist bombs go off, nobody notices because they simply have been told to ignore it.
Its a comedy, actually.
How about grabbing The Sleeve and hiding just behind the door... and when shooter enters, conk him over the head with it?!?
How many tremble with horror and anxiety at the mere mention of “fight”?
I work in a large hospital - this is our “new” training as well.
Some asked about carrying. Met with blank stares.
The Baseball Bat could also help here...
Nah - just unholster your .45 and pull the trigger.
Easy.
Pack heat, defend yourself.
Here in Charleston we have a yearly 6.2 mile bridge run that has thousands of entrants ( limited to 44,000 ). Since 1992 the winners have only been from Kenya or Ethiopia. So can they tell us about the running part again?
“workers arm themselves with fire extinguishers and phone cords as a shooter enters their office”
But what if he has a pointed stick?
Right, if the campus is a gun-free zone, they might as well make the slogan: “Run, Hide, Fight with one arm tied behind your back”.
90% of the students who viewed the film asked, "What is a phone cord?"
I made my own “rampart” door blocks by cutting a 3 1/2 inch wide by 41 inch long board, cutting a notch in the top end and nailing a piece of inner tube to the bottom.
Stick the top under the door knob, kick the bottom in and it makes a great door brace. Everyone in the family wants two or three!
Multi-purpose/multi-task .... works for me in the right circumstances. That being said .....
Seriously, one of the professors at VT was shot & killed trying to hold the door closed against the shooter while his students were all going out windows at the back of the classroom. I believe other students were shot through the door in another classroom while holding it closed. Something like The Sleeve should be standard issue in any classroom with an arm closer, IMO.
I have a close relative who but for their class schedule that day would have been in the building for sure & perhaps a classroom where the shootings took place at VT on another day of the week. This is a deadly serious issue to me.
FYI - spraying Fire Extinguisher power on the attach is very effective. Last
time is not banned - yet.
I’ve honestly had arguments with a lib (a British model), who was convinced that, even if you have a gun, using it to defend yourself against armed criminals is a bad idea.
He was convinced you were more likely to shoot an innocent person than the bad guy, so you shouldn’t even bother trying. Not even if you had a woman relying on you to protect them. That’s how insane they can get.
I'm working from memory here...
RUN FOR YOU GUN FREE SAFE SPACE SNOWFLAKES.
My mantra: Fight crime...shoot back.
This has been the deal for a while. In all of our emergency management meetings at work this has come up.
Of course my office is within steel reinforced walls and two key pad doors. And I have the most secure communications in the building. It was hardened when it was built to withstand a nuclear blast on the old local SAC base about five miles away.
So I will run—back to my office and I will hide behind the doors and taunt the moooslim through the intercom.
