Officials in the Obama administration threw cold water on the effort to recount votes in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania on Friday.
The effort was spearheaded by Green Party candidate Jill Stein, who echoed arguments that Russia may have hacked US voting machines to interfere with the outcome of the November 8 election.
A statement from the Obama administration cited by The New York Times acknowledged that the Kremlin likely expected the hacking of some Democratic Party entities in the run-up to Election Day to raise questions about the voting process and the legitimacy of President-elect Donald Trump's victory.
"Nevertheless, we stand behind our election results, which accurately reflect the will of the American people," the statement read.
Speculation that electronic voting machines could be hacked has largely been debunked, primarily because the machines are not connected to the internet.
Stein contended that this was a "hack-riddled election," that warrants a second look at the votes. Trump won by thin margins in the three states Stein aims to contest.
The Green Party sought to raise $7 million to fund the recount. Fundraising surpassed the $5 million mark on Friday. For her part, Stein only received one percent of the vote nationally.
Election officials in Wisconsin accepted a recount petition on Friday and announced that the effort was underway....

The conspiracy theorist in mean also believes that Trump and Obama cut some deal re: Clintons. Obama won’t back Hillary or protect her and Trump will give Obama something as yet to be seen.
With an ego like his, no way Barry ever got over being referred to ad Bill’s coffee boy.
Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!
All US elections are governed by State Constitutions; even Presidential Elections.
The Florida Constitution states that recounts must be state-wide. Nobody gets to pick and choose which Counties/Precincts are recounted and which are not. They must ALL be recounted, or none at all.
The Dems didn't want to recount the entire state, because there were places that might have flipped to Bush.
So the SCOTUS simply applied the law, and told the Dems, "Go ahead and recount - ALL the precincts". The Dems said, "We don't have time", which is nonsense. All the precincts are counted locally, at the same time.
It would have taken the same time to recount the entire state as it would take to recount one precinct. So the Dems spun the narrative that SCOTUS "Designated" Bush the winner.
Obama and Hillary are playing good cop and bad cop game. Do.not trust either of them.
RAT voter fraud may be found in the millions, ya think, like in Jerry Brown’s CA? Like the dead, illgals, felons, 10 registered to a house, voter name unknown, those who voted in two or more states, rigged voting machines?
Jill Stein is just using this as a money raising event for the Green Party. It will be interesting what will happen to the $5 million dollars when this recount goes nowhere. Who will keep the money and for what?
What was paid to Wisconsin will remain paid... however, the rest of it, not sure. Might be paid back to donors.
A newspaper survey done afterwards shows that Florida in 2000, completely recounted, would have had a several thousand vote margin in favor of GWB.
I don’t think 0 and H get along very well despite appearances.
Obama might be silently rooting but publicly taking the "high road. Or maybe something really dreadful turned up in those last batch of emails. Something so bad, that Obama would prefer not be revealed until he is out of office. At least then, he can say he only found about it in the newspapers.
I’d say they’re jealous of one another.
They want all the benefits of a recount (possible overturning of the election) minus the negative fallout. They don’t want to be seen as the ones pushing for the recount.
Unless Barack really has bowed to what is obvious to objective observers. Start tapping into military votes, etc., and it will lean further Trump.
And Trump’s W.H. Council McGhan is also the former head of the Federal Election Commission.
At least Yeb won three delegates with his oodles of borrowed cash.
Jill didn’t win a single electoral vote. Maybe after the votes are tendered and Trump wins, the electoral college could give her some kind of trophy. Or coupons to Red Lobster.
The 2008 primary battle left deep scars in both.
I think her claim was that the hacking happened within the vote aggregating system, which could occur even with paper ballots. In other words, the totals don’t match what the local precincts reported. Should be pretty easy to check against the individual precinct numbers. I’d worry that more votes have been added to those ballot boxes since election day, the local totals adjusted, and lo-and-behold they will have proved “hacking” of the central system because the local numbers must be the right ones.
It also easy to “hack” the ballot readers where paper ballots are used. There is a youtube video where a group proved they could replace a removable memory cartridge on the machine and have it report whatever they wanted after all the ballots were scanned. Correct total ballots but a pre-designed percentage applied for each candidate. Then those numbers from the reader are reported to the state system and no internet access was ever needed — the election gets hacked even though the ballots were paper and even though no one from outside could hack into anything. All you would have to do would be to send out the data cartridges that had been physically hacked ahead of time to misreport the results.
If voter fraud is found , in any great quantity, it would destroy the DemoRAT meme that there is no cheating
and that there is no voter fraud, at all.
Don't forget that as a result of a 50 yr old legal decision, the Republican Party is legally restricted from claiming voter fraud, indefintiely (!) .
If significant fraud is found, it would advance the need for voter ID, and Photo ID, and shorter period of mail-in ballots, much to the detriment of the DemoRAT agenda.
Boris Badanoff ...
All elections should return to paper ballots, where there is a PAPER TRAIL !
With electronic voting, I can't even verify that my vote was tallied correctly !!
