Kellyanne Conway, President-elect Trumps campaign manager, is publicly discouraging her boss from naming Mitt Romney as secretary of state.
Conway, a top transition adviser to Trump, tweeted Thursday that shes receiving a deluge of comments about Romney and then linked to a Politico story about Trump loyalists opposing the former Massachusetts governors nomination.
Receiving deluge of social media & private comms re: Romney Some Trump loyalists warn against Romney as sec of state, Conway tweeted.
In a follow-up tweet, she suggested that loyalty was an important criteria for the top diplomatic post.
Kissinger & Schultz as Secs of State flew around the world less, counseled POTUS close to home more. And were loyal. Good checklist, she said.
Conways public skepticism demonstatres the internal tug of war over the secretary of states slot. .
A Trump insider said Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner and Reince Priibus, the Republican National Committee chairman tapped to become the White House chief of staff, are pushing Romney.
But Trump senior counselor and strategist Stephen Bannon and Conway oppose Romney, a source familiar with the discussions said.
The other leading candidate is former Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
During the campaign, Romney was an outspoken critic of Trump, describing him as a con artist who was temperamentally unfit to be president.

True, Romney has been publicly treacherous already. (I don’t know about GHWB, I wasn’t around then.)
Exactly.
Seems so. I don’t trust Rinsed Penis.
I’m more concerned with who will head Treasury than SoS right now.
Reagan was my first Presidential election. Was 19 at the time. I remember being absolutely amazed by him, and his magnificent patriotism and unabashed, beautiful Americanism.
Looking back, Reagan probably accepted GHWB to placate the Party; he got much the same reaction from the liberal GOP wing as Trump got, but it SEEMS a lot less vitriolic than Trump.
They’re out and out psycho over Trump. Like the old saying: Flak = Over Target.
Backstabbing Mitt’s political career is one well deserved breath away from oblivion. Why does Trump want to had him an oxygen mask?
Welll...
We don’t know that he definitely IS doing that... I’ve considered the possibilty that he just might have invited him there to let him know there’s a new Sheriff in town.
Many possibilities right now. I’m sort of just watching it unfold, before jumping to conclusions. No sense getting flipped out about something that hasn’t actually happened.
I know KT was just named dep nat sec, but is there a good reason why they aren’t considering McFarland for SoS? Unless she has unknown (to me) baggage I think she’d be great choice..
What he did was so beyond the pale and the fact that he came running like a trained dog to meet with Trump really sealed him as nothing more than an opportunist (at best). I still have to believe Trump is toying with him.
Update here. Do you still support Willard for SECSTATE?
Well stated.
The mittites have still not given up...
Trump has to be playing with Romneykins.
Sure, it’s one thing to be open to critics, but Romneykins called Trump racist and sexist and all kinds of horrible things, and openly worked to sabotage his candidacy long AFTER he was the party’s nominee.
Ok, some party “healing” by letting Romneykins be openly considered, have smiling meeting and photo op, but no way should he ever be selected!
Golly, Mark, I was only saying that if Lincoln could put up with Seward, Trump could put up with Willard. But I don’t support Willard. I support whatever Trump thinks he needs to do, for whatever his reasons might be.
I heard someone speculate that Trump wants open debate among his advisors. If he didn’t it wouldn’t be happening. It allows him to sit back and judge peoples reactions before he decides. Think of it as The Apprentice on steriods.
Got it!!! Makes sense.
I agree with you completely in contrasting Mitt against other, more steadfast individuals. Our country has been trapped under the squishy leadership of weak men for too long.
