Aretha Franklin's Insanely Long Five Minute National Anthem Causes a Twitter Meltdown

The only thing more dramatic than the Lions' 16-13 fourth-quarter win over the Vikings on Thursday was Aretha Franklin's rendition of the national anthem.

Actually, "dramatic" might not be the best word to use to describe Franklin's performance.

"Never-ending" would probably work better after Franklin somehow managed to belt the anthem out for a full four minutes and 35 seconds.

To put that into perspective, oddsmakers usually expect the national anthem at the Super Bowl to run for roughly two minutes.

Franklin doubled that, plus some, and let's just say people on Twitter weren't amused.

I loathe it when a singer makes the National Anthem about THEM.

The NFL doesn't give a damn if singers shred the National Anthem to pieces - they're liberal elites who hate this country and the 'deplorables' who fill their stadiums.

"I loathe it when a singer makes the National Anthem about THEM."

A common problem in recent years, and I won't give a description of the typical offender.

"I loved that she accompanied herself."

On YouTube, there's a black-and-white clip of Aretha performing "Don't Play That Song" on German TV sometime back in the 60s or early 70s. She accompanies herself on piano, with two or three backup singers, and - in my opinion - it's a fabulous performance.

Yeah, but Jose set the precedent, and it went downhill from there.

Come on, guys. I listened to all 5 minutes of it, and while it wasn’t my choice of style, it wasn’t that bad. It’s just that we live in a culture of short attention spans. We think that substantial issues can be discussed in three-minute sound bites or 140-character twitters.

She would have done better to have sung the song normally and included all four stanzas of a very profound poem. She could’ve done that in about the same five minutes!

Ms. Franklin “churched” it up. That’s why she appeared with her Hammond organ player.

Not my preference, but I’ll leave it to others to determine its tastefulness as a patriotic tribute.

I was more concerned that this wealthy tycoon appeared in expensive Chinchilla coast on national television without a bicuspid tooth.

It’s not trashing. It’s not worth getting upset over. Frankly, I thought the way Lady Gaga did the anthem at last year’s Super Bowl was worse.

Some of those singers sound like they’re having a difficult time with a bowel movement.

Probably was, I didn't watch either, and there is a reason why I didn't. Can't think of that crotch grabbing pig but you probably remember that one because it was endlessly on 24/7 news channels.

I just don't like the ghetto yodeling, a new term I learned on this thread, but it seems to fit.

Listening to her aging voice was the most painful part for those who “remember when”....

That's why I am not clicking on any links to it.
