Rival factions of Republicans are locked in an increasingly caustic and public battle to influence President-elect Donald J. Trumps choice for secretary of state, leaving a prominent hole in an otherwise quickly formed national security team that is unlikely to be filled until next week at the earliest.
The debate inside Mr. Trumps wide circle of formal and informal advisers pitting supporters of one leading contender, Mitt Romney, against those of another, Rudolph W. Giuliani has led to the kind of dramatic airing of differences that characterized Mr. Trumps unconventional and often squabbling campaign team. And it traces the outlines of the enduring split in the Republican Party between establishment figures who scoffed at Mr. Trumps chances of victory and the grass-roots insurgents who backed him as a disrupter of the Washington power structure.
The most publicly vocal faction has been the group opposed to Mr. Romney, which has questioned whether he would be loyal after his searing criticism of Mr. Trump during the campaign. But Mr. Trump himself has told aides that he believes Mr. Romney looks the part and would make a fine secretary of state, a senior Trump official said on Thursday. Mr. Trump, who is always difficult to read and is capable of changing his mind at any minute, has also praised Mr. Giuliani in recent conversations with acquaintances.

I don't trust Romney at this point for anything.
Who is the source that says it’s between these two? No other names? I doubt it
The NY Slime telling the truth? Nonsense.
If Romney is SOS, I will sadly understand that the GOPe and neocons will still run things.
The Romney faction should carry zero weight. Rudy was loyal and is both qualified to do the job and to drain the state Department swamp - no doubt he will have Sessions on speed dial. And besides it’s the NYT reporting this, so take it with a salt mine full of salt.
Why these two?? The bench is deeper than this.
Romney, on the other hand...
The only people I’ve heard/seen on TV that support Romney as SOS are IMO exactly who I would expect to support him.
I can’t see Romney in a Trump administration. Not just due his mouth during the campaign, but the simple fact he lost against a loser. We don’t need that experience in such an important position as Sec. of State.
Giuliani? He’ll DO, for cripes sake!
BTW, where’s John Bolton, anyway?
From inside the Trump campaign they let slip that they have been just deluged with opinions about Romney, and that the overwhelming majority think he is an unfaithful loser.
Folks need to ignore the media. They don’t have a clue about much that’s real & they spend a fortune everyday trying to get us to believe stuff that’s isn’t real.
I don’t think Newt’s willing to sign onto the 5-year ban on lobbying.
None of the above!
The only thing Romney should be secretary of is Trump University, where he would be expertly schooled on how to actually be loyal to the party which handed him the nomination in 2012 only to see him fumble it away on the one-yard line. As for Sec. of State, I don’t think Trump would do that to his supporters, or to the world. Romney’s day, hopefully, has come and gone.
careful. someone’s going to call you a neocon or something because you mentioned john bolton, the most eminently qualified man on the planet to be SoS
The NYTs, presenting fake news for going on five decades...
Seems like it to me. From my adulthood in 1969 on, this paper and the Washington Post seemed to live in an alternate universe from me.
Amen.
Whew this is such an easy call.
Romney needs to be totally out of everything
LOL. John Bolton is possibly the only choice worse than Romney.
