'We don't need the FCC': A Trump advisor's proposal to dissolve America's telecom watchdog
LA Times ^ | 11/24/16 | Brian Fung

Posted on 11/24/2016 2:46:48 AM PST by markomalley

A top advisor to Donald Trump on tech policy matters proposed all but abolishing the nation's telecom regulator last month, foreshadowing possible moves by the president-elect to sharply reduce the Federal Communications Commission's role as a consumer protection watchdog.

In an Oct. 21 blog post, Mark Jamison, who on Monday was named one of two members of Trump's tech policy transition team, laid out his ideal vision for the government's role in telecommunications, concluding there is little need for the agency to exist.

"Most of the original motivations for having an FCC have gone away," Jamison wrote. "Telecommunications network providers and [Internet service providers] are rarely, if ever, monopolies."

The FCC declined to comment for this story, but its current leadership has disagreed strongly with that analysis. Its Democratic chairman, Tom Wheeler, has spoken of an Internet service "duopoly" in much of the country that limits competition. And he has compared telecommunications to the rail and telegraph networks of the 19th century, calling for new rules of the road as the Internet becomes the dominant communications platform of the 21st century.

Put it back to its ORIGINAL MISSION and I think we’d all be happy. :-)

Terrible why?

Ever see what is on cable? What is the point of “regulating” anything if the most vile trash is the result?

The FCC is worthless in the modern era.

Dead wrong.

Not just kind of wrong, or little wrong. Dead wrong.

It’s an omelette. An omelette made with three eggs, sausage, cheese, mushrooms, jalapenos, and bacon. But two of the eggs were rancid.

You can’t separate two rancid eggs out of an omelette you have already made. And you cannot reform an overblown bureaucracy full of employees dedicated to a myriad of socialist causes by writing new rules and then trying to identify and fire those who defy the reduced mission.

In both cases you have to start fresh. For the same reasons.

With the internet’s effectively infinite channels, the FCC is an anachronism.

I know some radio engineers who will be thrilled. Soon you’ll be able to hear their stations on Jupiter.

Facebook and Twitter should not be monitoring or censoring like the Chinese.

urther, de-confliction with foreign (international sources) wasn't possible either. The same thing with the microwave spectrum

The unlicensed band doesn't need deconfliction so I don't see why the licensed bands do. When I did some tests for RF compliance I noticed a huge jolt of noise every now and then although it didn't affect my signal. Then I went to the other side of the building and saw someone running the microwave oven.

Even with the microwave relays that connect these towers to the regular comm system.

Antenna design is pretty easy nowadays. You can figure out the energy in the beam and then determine how much amplification you will be allowed. It can mostly be policed by industry.

This is a terrible idea.

I partly agree. The FCC is important for a shared resource like the radio spectrum. It should back off from its editorial intrusions into content and its attempted expansion of influence into the internet, which was working just fine.

I spent most of my career designing, analyzing and testing antennas.....you tell me when you can pump a 1 or a 0 out of them all by their digital self and I’ll shut up.

If antenna design is do easy now, why do our weapons systems developments spend so much money on them? Further, pure amplification without consideration of noise figure, N=kTB, and system losses can’t solve that pesky Friis transmission equations.

Yes, let the FCC do what it was supposed to do. One example, the FCC may, sometime lift its antiquated symbol rate (baud) restriction on the HF ham bands. Every other country has long since removed the old 300 baud limit. The FCC simply hasn’t kept up with RF technology.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.

But wait, there’s more...
