At first blush, Donald Trumps decision to swear off criminal investigations of Hillary Clinton didnt look like a good idea.
At second blush, it looks like a terrible idea.
The decision, dribbled out in a TV report and then confirmed by aide Kellyanne Conway, is too momentous to come in bits and pieces and from anyone other than Trump directly. He made the pledge at a debate to appoint a special prosecutor, and it smacks of Washington-as-usual for the reversal to slither out the back door.
Yet instead of the president-elect personally explaining his big decision, the public got snippets of comments he made during an interview with the New York Times.
I dont want to hurt the Clintons, I really dont, the paper quoted him as saying. She went through a lot and suffered greatly in many different ways.
Asked whether he had ruled out a prosecution, he reportedly said, Its just not something that I feel very strongly about.

Exactly. It’s out of his hands. Only the Attorney General can decide whether or not to prosecute.
No, once President Trump takes the oath of office on 1/20/2017, the rule of law will be re-established and return the balance of powers to the other branches of government!
The office of the President has no prosecutorial powers!!!!
I agree with all those who suggest that Trump needs to stay above the fray and once he is actually in office, let the process take it’s course with the FBI and AG and those whose job it is to actually investigate and prosecute wrongdoings. For him to personally get involved in commenting on this has no upside for him other than to appease who desperately want to see the House of Clinton finally reap what it has sown.... but those are people who are just impatient and the administration has 4 years to deal with this so all in good time. I’m also thinking that Trump wants to do everyone a favour and have the idiot ‘protests’ come to an end...why do or say anyone that gives that crowd a buffoons a reason to keep it going. Why not let that die down and then after he is elected, the process can take its course.
It sets a dreadful example and further undermines faith in our government

If he lets her get away with it, it sends the message to other would be Clintons that you can lie, cheat and steal and nothing will happen to you. The Clintons must be held accountable if we are to be a country of laws. In many respects, this will be a litmus test for Trump.
She committed crimes ... poor widdle woman. *sniff*
So, you’re advocating the shredding of the Constitution and the killing of American citizens? Am I reading you correctly?
He also said months ago that his promises were not binding.
I heard Newt (I think it was Newt) on Fox & Friends early this morning saying that Trump said that he will explain his statement about Hillary at a later date and that his supporters would be happy and that it would all make sense. That makes me think that he just wants to be quiet about this until after inauguration day. I hope I heard it right.
I don’t see Trump as one that would break a promise like that. He might not be pushing for her to be charged but he won’t stop his DOJ or a special prosecutor from doing it.
Obama & the Dims have ignored most of our laws for as long as I can remember, so why should any pardon issued by Obama be honored?
Clinton is a major part of the swamp that has to be cleared. Come on Trump, don’t be letting us down! Let your AG take it over which is his job to do, not yours.
Where do people get the idea that the decision to prosecute or not is Trump’s decision to make.
This doesn't mean he would prevent his AG from doing so if the AG thought the evidence demanded it.
This permits him to stay above the fray and devote his attention to his plans without getting blamed for a political witch hunt.
Exactly!
That's not what he said before the election and before he won.
No she hasn't... not nearly enough.
Regards,
Trump is setting it up so that the independent FBI and Justice Department can pursue justice. Stop clutching your pearls.
I wouldn’t say that he should make it his first order of business, or go back and tell the Justice Department to change its mind on things, but as the things continue, I’d expect him not to squash them
Unless he knows what Hillary’s actual health really is and she isn’t long for the world anyway.
If true.... Trump has stabbed us in the back.
