President-elect Donald Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress are drawing up plans to take on the government bureaucracy they have long railed against, by eroding job protections and grinding down benefits that federal workers have received for a generation.
Hiring freezes, an end to automatic raises, a green light to fire poor performers, a ban on union business on the governments dime and less generous pensions these are the contours of the blueprint emerging under Republican control of Washington in January.
These changes were once unthinkable to federal employees, their unions and their supporters in Congress. But Trumps election as an outsider promising to shake up a system he told voters is awash in waste, fraud and abuse has conservatives optimistic that they could do now what Republicans have been unable to do in the 133 years since the civil service was created.

The really big one is AFSCME. Largest union in the country, I think.
The biggest federal employee union is AFGE.
Agree with the first part, not so much the second....
There is currently a silent war on older white males in the federal government, more so if they are veterans.
“If he cant fire them, he should reassign them all to ditch-digging or envelope-licking”
Anyone who doesn’t like it or cooperate will have their position reassigned to wall builder.
They may not like it, though I am sure it will leave a smile on my face. I’m going to enjoy reading the news every day for the next 4 years. Schadenfreude.

BULLSHIT!

I agree with the idea that we need Civil Service reform starting with the Justice Department.
Neil Armstrong was another well-known federal employee. Just saying.
I have worked around federales who did almost NOTHING. It was amazing.
FIRE ALL those who do not work, that would be the WHOLE DAMNED place which would be fine with me! ! SHUT IT DOWN!!! Except military of course!!!
Believe me, I know. I keep continued contact through a union steward I know. Everything is random and seems to depend on the bile or favor of some ghetto princess or other.
Shouldn’t they also be allowed to enjoy the benefits of the Finest Health Insurance our Government has to offer??
We just found out over the weekend that it will take YEARS to Abolish and Replace Obamacare, so I propose that in the interim we enact PEACE
The Public Employee Affordable Care Enrollment Act.
this can be done by Executive Orders without the Legislature even being involved or having ANY SAY WHATSOEVER
All Persons that can be Classified as a “Federal Employee”, SHALL purchase and maintain their own personal and family health Insurance from the Affordable Care Act Exchange in the State they legally reside.
All Military Personnel shall be exempt from this order.
All TAXPAYER monies saved on Private Health Insurance shall be redirected to Building a Wall on our Southern Border.
Drain the swamp!
This is music to my ears.
“It looks like Trump is going to eliminate whole departments and change the dysfunctional federal government.”
Let’s hope you’re right.
Only one true reform is needed. Discontinue withholding of Union dues immediately, and rescind recognition of Unions at the end of each current contract. If they go on strike, replace them with workers from discontinued programs first and when you run out of those hire temps until the end of the contract. Done.
undo the JFK executive order that allowed government employees to unionize and you will do more than anything to undo the rediculous damage that has been done to our republic than most other things, and it can be done with the stroke of a pen!
