Trump has a plan for government workers. They’re not going to like it.

President-elect Donald Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress are drawing up plans to take on the government bureaucracy they have long railed against, by eroding job protections and grinding down benefits that federal workers have received for a generation.

Hiring freezes, an end to automatic raises, a green light to fire poor performers, a ban on union business on the government’s dime and less generous pensions — these are the contours of the blueprint emerging under Republican control of Washington in January.

These changes were once unthinkable to federal employees, their unions and their supporters in Congress. But Trump’s election as an outsider promising to shake up a system he told voters is awash in “waste, fraud and abuse” has conservatives optimistic that they could do now what Republicans have been unable to do in the 133 years since the civil service was created.

Employees under investigation for breaking the rules can sit at home for years — collecting paychecks and benefits — while their cases drag on. Performance rankings are widely panned as a joke, because the vast majority of workers are rated as exceeding expectations or doing outstanding work.

Federal workers are seldom fired for poor performance — and it can take years for managers to make a successful case for dismissal for misconduct. About 0.5 percent of the civil service gets fired every year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics."

It looks like Trump is going to eliminate whole departments and change the dysfunctional federal government.

This is why Trump Jr and Melania should not live in DC. To drain the swamp, you have to be universally hated there. Even the people who do not work for government will see their property values plunge as a result of reining in government.

Pinch me, for years I have been on a screed here on FR, where is DC's Demming, Kazien, Sig Sigma, Right Sizing, and all the internal painful transformations we all had to endure in the 80's, 90's and beyond to come out the other end as a profitable viable organization. Finally it might be here, they need to experience it, they have taken us for granted for years..

My father worked as a Civil Service employee for the USAF until 30 years ago - at a time when many accepted the lower pay in exchange for the better long term retirement benefits. Since then it seems like the wages have increased to be at least as competitive as the commercial sector (at least for USAF civil service employees) while they retained better job security (retirement benefits may not as good as they used to be).

It will be hard to change the whole system, but hopefully improvements can be made for the taxpayer benefit.

If he can’t fire them, he should reassign them all to ditch-digging or envelope-licking. Something to keep them out of trouble. He could create a new government agency solely for that purpose.

How many of those will apply to Congress and its staff? I'm thinking none of them.
