Schubert’s three mature complete quartets were written for professionals, and they make tremendous demands on the musicians.

His final quartet, written at age 29, features a scherzo that looks forward to Mendelssohn. There is just a bit of playfulness in this music, but mostly it’s serious and not just because it’s in a minor key.
