After Donald Trump won despite losing the popular vote count, liberals everywhere were (once again) demanding an end to the electoral college. Most of it was all talk. After all, how can we possibly change a system that has worked for over 200 years?
Well, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) has taken the next step: She is introducing a bill to put an end to the electoral college once and for all.
"In my lifetime, I have seen two elections where the winner of the general election did not win the popular vote," said Senator Boxer on her Senate website. "When all the ballots are counted, Hillary Clinton will have won the popular vote by a margin that could exceed two million votes, and she is on track to have received more votes than any other presidential candidate in history except Barack Obama. This is the only office in the land where you can get more votes and still lose the presidency. The Electoral College is an outdated, undemocratic system that does not reflect our modern society, and it needs to change immediately. Every American should be guaranteed that their vote counts."
While Trump tweeted in 2012 that the electoral college system is a "disaster," he said on Monday that the system, put in place by our Founding Fathers, is fair because it compels presidential candidates to visit smaller states that would otherwise be ignored.
Boxer is expected to put forward her legislation as the Senate convenes on Tuesday.
If all the Dems had to do was come up with 5-10 million extra votes in Philadelphia and NYC, that would be easy. If you take away election fraud, we would likely loose our two party system./sarc
Has she never read the Constitution? /rhetorical, not needing an answer.
The establishment of the EC is explicitly stated in the Constitution. It would take more than a law to abolish it. And I don’t think the states which are pushed around by the bully states (Cal. et al) would ratify.
With the GOP in total control of 31 state legislatures! Rats only totally control 8 and the remaining 11 are split legislatures. Good luck getting that amendment ratified by the states Babs Boxer!!
She wont get 50% in either house of Congress anyways. She is confused if she thinks a simple bill can eliminate the Electoral College (unless the bill states it is to amend the constitution!)
Ms Boxer’s face is looking a bit taut.
Now there have to be poll watchers checking every one of those absentee and other ballots, especially in a close election. Thousands of local boards will have to work for a week or more after election day just to get the final numbers, after all a few votes in Maine might offset a couple in Hawaii and change the outcome.
Only a fool could even think that this would be a workable way to elect a president (wait, Babs Boxer, that explains it).
First, neither Gore nor Hillary “won” the popular vote. At best, they made it into the top two for a runoff. Because if you are going to adopt a popular vote rule, you better make it a majority, or else people will flood the field to muddy up the waters.
Imagine 10 “Evan McMullen” candidates, picked for popularity in their home states, but really backed by the opposition party, in order to drive down the popular vote for the major party candidate. This strategy is relatively useless with the electoral college, because you can’t take enough votes really to swing a state. But if you took 5% off the Texas numbers, you could easily make a republican lose.
Second, of course Boxer should push this. Her state benefits tremendously if they make a popular vote for President, because her state has liberal voting laws and a lot of democrats, and probably registers more illegals than any other state.
Boxer wants her illegal aliens friends in notoriously-lax voter ID state of California to decide for Americans.
No thanks.
Weeeeelll, hold on here just one minute! Then, she’ll want that changed, TOO!
Two amendments to her going nowhere bill stop the craziness:
1. Every member of Congress, the President and Vice President and SCOTUS must have an annual psychiatric examination to determine sanity; and
2. Any person, non-citizen, felon, otherwise ineligible or incapable that is determined to have voted illegally shall cause the election to be decided for the opponent.
She lost count. There were four, Bill Clinton in ‘92 and ‘96, George W. Bush in 2000, and now Donald J. Trump. So what.
Undemocratic? You mean, every aspect of the Constitution is supposed to be Democratic? OK. Let’s have democratically elected federal judges, too. Will the elections be for the geographic area over which the judge has jurisdiction, or a national election for every judge? And assuming you say national, let’s say the District Judge for the Southern District of New York is wildly popular in California, but thoroughly hated in New York? Does California have the right to impose him on New York? Or let’s say you say a local election, involving only the Southern District of New York, i.e., Brooklyn. The judge will be a federal judge, determining matters of federal law, including diversity of citizenship cases, and his rulings will be precedents that can be adopted by higher courts on appeal, ultimately reaching SCOTUS. What right does this New York pipsqueak have to alter the law for the entire nation, when he was only elected in Brooklyn?
Same goes with POTUS elections. A chief executive for the United States has to ask for the consent of all the states, if he is to be elevated over all of them. The Electoral College is the best balance that can be hoped for between federal and local spheres of power.
Boxer, read the Federalist Papers. Read Alexis deTocqueville. Read the Constitution. If you don’t have a copy, you can borrow mine.
That face has been pulled so tight, from so many facelifts, she has 270 degree peripheral vision.
2/3 senate, 2/3 house, 2/3 popular vote.......ain’t EVER going to happen, and she knows it.
Let’s have a popular vote gay marriage transgender bathrooms and abortion legality. That would not need a constitutional amendment, and all are wildly unpopular with the general public.
First of all Babs, it is a Representative republic with 50 sovereign states. Secondly, the EC exists so everyone's votes has equal weight and cities do not have the ability to have more of a say in the the election then a small tow in Iowa.
Boxer is a well known islamist facilitator.
She is just throwing red meat to her idiot base. She can see that bus coming.
She’s gotta be smart enough to know this will not get very far, as she’ll never get a 2/3d’s vote out of a Republican House & Senate.
I think she’s just politicking to impress the mindless she represents.
She and the rest of the "elite" in California are convinced they should run the whole country, not just the once great State they're driving over a cliff.
