Republicans Again Choose Paul Ryan as House Speaker
New York Slimes ^

Posted on 11/15/2016 11:16:58 AM PST by TigerClaws

WASHINGTON — House Republicans renominated Speaker Paul D. Ryan as their leader on Tuesday, quieting rumors of an initial revolt in the party in the wake of feuding between Mr. Ryan and President-elect Donald J. Trump while Democrats grappled with their own potential insurrection.

To retain the speaker’s job, Mr. Ryan, of Wisconsin, will still have to clear a vote by the full House when the new Congress assembles in January — when he must win at least 218 votes. With the results of a few contests outstanding, Republicans will hold at least 239 seats, leaving a relatively healthy margin for dissent in their ranks. The House Republicans said in a Twitter message that Ryan’s selection was unanimous.

But Mr. Ryan will have more than his contentious relationship with Mr. Trump to navigate. Stephen K. Bannon, the former chairman of Breitbart News, whom Mr. Trump named as his chief strategist, is a longtime critic of Mr. Ryan.

Though he endorsed Mr. Trump and urged Americans to vote for him in the days leading up to the lection, Mr. Ryan repeatedly criticized Mr. Trump’s more inflammatory statements during the campaign, once criticizing his proposed ban on Muslims as “not what this country stands for.” After the release of a 2005 recording in which Mr. Trump boasted in vulgar terms about sexually assaulting women, Mr. Ryan disinvited him to a planned joint appearance in Wisconsin and told Republicans he would no longer defend him nor campaign for him. Mr. Trump had said privately before his victory that Mr. Ryan should be punished for not offering his full support.

Trump has got to know RYNO is a fair weather friend who will stab him in the back again the first second he thinks power has shifted in a different direction.

Ratface Ryan still holds the bloody knife he ineffectually put into Trump’s back.

Ryan’s political career needs a lurid, brutal termination.

Trump is savvy as is his bevy of close advisors and family...Ryan may know his leash is short.

Exactly. The pearl-clutching here AFTER TRUMP WON THE FRICKIN’ ELECTION - is a bit pathetic, IMHO.

I can't help thinking that Trump selecting Priebus as his Chief of Staff only helps Ryan - Priebus is reportedly a close friend and ally of Ryan, and the perception has to be that Trump wants to work with Ryan.

Why not force Ryan out and bring in a new speaker who isn't openly hostile to the idea of a border wall and other Trump initiatives? Trump certainly has the mandate to do this with allies in Congress.

“Stop the ‘pearl clutching and the fainting sofa’ crap, and stand up and watch the Master at work...”

Not pearl clutching one bit. I want Ratface Ryan politically eviscerated. I want to feel his figurative hot blood and guts spilling over my feet so I can wriggle my toes in it. If there are any ‘pearls’ to be clutched it is for the sole purpose of twisting them hard and tearing them off.

He didn’t just betray Trump, he betrayed ALL of us while serving as Obama’s punkwalla and catamite after Boehner was decanted from office. Ratface Ryan’s many and exorbitant bills to America remain outstanding, whether President Trump elects to forgive him or not not for gnawing on Trump’s shoelaces, stump legged rodent that Ryan is.

This is a sign that nothing is going to change.

The slow hiss of air out of our incredible opportunity. President Trump may be much different, but "same boss as the old boss?" Ryan is absolutely contemptible and tried very hard to derail the Trump Train. Any congress critter voting him back to leadership are morons.

This had to happen.

1) The debt ceiling. Who else could get the necessary votes together to make it happen?

2) The budget. As one person, Ryan knows more about the Federal budget than anyone else in Congress. There is FINALLY going to be budgets submitted ON TIME, and that would not happen without him.

3) He’s devoutly Catholic. Trumps tape bothered him. He got past it.

On the plus side, Ryno won’t have a voice in any vote unless it’s a tie. That’s one less liberal vote. Not much power in being the Speaker.

The most hopeful thing I see on the horizon is the placement of Bannon.

He is no fan of Ryan, and he is no wimp.

If he’s going that route why not Sean Duffy? He’s awesome and from Wisconsin.

It depends upon how one defines, devoutly Catholic.

I know several truly devout and conservative Catholics, including my closest friend. Paul Ryan is not their definition of one.

Stivers wins, a slight setback for Trump IMO but Stivers did support Trump through the campaign. Though unenthusiastically.
Williams was better, though not enthusiastic either.

NRCC chair dishes out the campaign dough. That affects votes.

there is a plan here somewhere, and in time, Trump will show us..

Gonna hold you to that statement. I think the GOPE are positioning themselves.
