This had to happen.
1) The debt ceiling. Who else could get the necessary votes together to make it happen?
2) The budget. As one person, Ryan knows more about the Federal budget than anyone else in Congress. There is FINALLY going to be budgets submitted ON TIME, and that would not happen without him.
3) He’s devoutly Catholic. Trumps tape bothered him. He got past it.
It depends upon how one defines, devoutly Catholic.
I know several truly devout and conservative Catholics, including my closest friend. Paul Ryan is not their definition of one.

Ryan promised 'regular order' and a budget THIS year and did not keep his promise. If Ryan had kept his budget promise, maybe ... just maybe I'd consider giving him some slack. He did not keep his promise and it's a BIG dang deal with me (& some other Freedom Caucus members, too).
Speaker Ryan promised last year that if elected, he would adhere to regular order. It didn't happen. Instead we find ourselves in a lame-duck budget process with Obama at the negotiating table right before Christmas. Is this what the American people want?
This year, the House didn't even vote on a budget. Instead, we proceeded directly to appropriations bills, spending taxpayer money at an unprecedented $1.07 trillion. This, despite Republican control of both the Senate and the House. The deficit for this year alone is in the $600 billion range.
