WASHINGTON (AP) - Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani emerged as the favorite to serve as secretary of state in Donald Trump's incoming administration, a senior Trump official said as the president-elect narrowed down his Cabinet picks.

The official said there was no real competition for the job and that it was Giuliani's if he wanted it. The official was not authorized to speak on the record and requested anonymity.

Giuliani, a top Trump adviser, said Monday night at a Washington event sponsored by the Wall Street Journal that he "won't be attorney general" in Trump's administration - a job for which the former federal prosecutor had been seen as a top contender even before Trump's election.

Pence would be ideal but he already has a job. The exactly right person is out there. It’s not Gingrich either. Could be Bolton. Sessions, maybe?

It only makes sense when you realize that it is coming from leftist Philadelphia fishwrappers. The left is TERRIFIED by Bolton at State as they are PETRIFIED by the idea of Rudy as Attorney General. Therefore, and since they are magnificently qualified for those jobs, ignore the leftist press/media and appoint them where they are qualified.

What does Giuliani know about foreign policy? As a Justice Department trial attorney, he broke up major Mafia families in NYC. He can ake child's play of dissolving, fining, jailing and obliterating the Clinton Family Crime Foundation.

John Bolton has forgotten more about foreign policy than everyone else ever knew and still knows more than they do. He has gonads and would be the toughest Secretary of State in human memory.

Perhaps you can tell us why you imagine that John Bolton is “not to be trusted.” Or do you prefer to libel him without specifics?

It is about time we had a bomb-throwing PATRIOT as Secretary of State. That would be John Bolton.

Remember when Rudy escorted Arafat out of a NY movie theater and out of the city when he came to NY to make a speech at the UN? People were shocked and stunned, but he defended himself credibly and it quickly blew over.

Rudy is not a diplomat, but he will clean the swamp over at the State Dept. It is one odious place - anti Israel and anti everything this country should be about even during Republican administrations. Every pub president says it is impossible to control the State Dept. I want to watch Trump and someone else control it.

Disagree. I cannot remember the last cabinet level appointee that made any policy difference—except maybe the AG.

Check in on Joan Larsen, Associate Justice Michigan Supreme Court, 48 years old, former professor at University of Michigan Law School who clerked for Judge David Sentelle and for ANTONIN SCALIA. No known controversies and, if Scalia did not find her views very similar to his, he would not have hired her. She is an alumna of Northwestern University Law School in Illinois and is a native of Iowa. She is on Trump's list of potential nominees as published.

There is no way that 72 year old pro-abort Giuliani gets appointed to SCOTUS. If Trump NEEDED a temporary appointment like that, he can appoint the senior judge of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi) Judge Jerry Edwin Smith of Texas who is, IIRC, 69 years old with more than thirty years of service on the 5th Circuit. A few years ago he threatened to jail Eric Holder and a young Justice Department attorney unless they provided him with a statement under oath that they would obey the orders of his court. He gave them 48 hours to comply and they did by filing the affidavit. No nonsense Jerry Smith. He was also Reagan's state chairman in Texas against Gerald Ford and chair of the Texas delegation. I know Jerry since his days at Yale and Yale Law and have no doubt that he would resign from SCOTUS if and when asked to make way for a young hardline judge and then he could go back to the Fifth Circuit.

I am well aware of that. However...

"The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is a cabinet department of the United States federal government with responsibilities in public security, roughly comparable to the interior or home ministries of other countries. Its stated missions involve antiterrorism, border security, immigration and customs, cybersecurity, and disaster prevention and management.

It was created in response to the September 11 attacks. In fiscal year 2011 it was allocated a budget of $98.8 billion and spent, net, $66.4 billion.

With more than 240,000 employees, DHS is the third largest Cabinet department, after the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs.

Homeland security policy is coordinated at the White House by the Homeland Security Council. Other agencies with significant homeland security responsibilities include the Departments of Health and Human Services, Justice, and Energy.

DHS data management could be administered by the NSA. Crime detection and law enforcement should be handled by the FBI and CIA. There are too many redundancies in the federal government. And DHS is just another of many.. If you like bloat, that's your prerogative, but the government should be run like a business.

Trump has taken a decidedly non-interventionist tone throughout the election. He has also taken a peace-through-strength tone. Bolton could work as a no-nonsense big-stick SoS, which is why he was my first choice, but Trump may see it differently. He may see State as needing clean-up first and Guilliani would be better for that phase. I don’t think this article is official in any way.

You are certainly correct that there is too much redundancy in the Federal government. The solution is generally to consolidate functions in one place, not duplicate them in yet another layer of bureaucracy. That seems to be where DHS has gone wrong — it is another layer instead of replacing the redundancy. Eliminating DHS doesn’t solve the redundancy problem. Reforming DHS and all the reporting agencies would do that.

I am all in favor of the war on the elites, perhaps the most important war of all. I am what you would likely regard as a warmonger. A unilateral policy of interventionism on our terms with no one's permission.

That said, the incompetency of Dubya and Obozo has tapped us out financially and in terms of hardware and personnel.

Therefore: no interest in intervening in Syria (let them slaughter each other and drain THEIR $$$$$ and manpower.

Iraq became a disaster because we just HAD to leave troops there to nationbuild. If we have reason to attack a country, do it from the sky, kill people, confiscate or break their things force them to pay every nickel of expense by seizing oil resources as necessary and get the hell out. Rinse and repeat wth increasing intensity as necessary. Sodamn Insane should not have been allowed to survive Poppy Bush's War but Poppy was too interested in Let's Make a Deal rather than stretching the bastard's neck.

Libya: See Syria.

Ukraine: Depends on whether we can get along with Putin. We should insist on freedom for the long-suffering Ukrainian people especially if diplomatic assurances to Putin will suffice as the price.

Iran: We can do this soon or we can wait until they can and will nuke Israel and the US, which they have vowed to do. Me? I want to abrogate Obozo's phony treaty, destroy each and every Iranian nuclear weapons facility, demand an end to the rule of the mullahs OR if they won't do that, nuke Iran off the face of the earth. That is why we have Ohio Class submarines. Just the kind of boy I am. As a bonus, John Kerry and Algore and Obongo will have a collective nervous breakdown over what it might do for their "global climate change" fantasies.
