The Democrats Screwed Up
NYTimes ^ | NOV. 11, 2016 | Frank Bruni

Posted on 11/12/2016 9:08:52 PM PST by aquila48

We geniuses in the news media spent only the last month telling you how Donald Trump was losing this election. We spent the last year telling you how the Republican Party was unraveling.

And here we are, with the Democrats in tatters. You might want to think twice about our Oscar and Super Bowl predictions.

Despite all the discussion of demographic forces that doomed the G.O.P., it will soon control the presidency as well as both chambers of Congress and two of every three governor’s offices. And that’s not just a function of James Comey, Julian Assange and misogyny. Democrats who believe so are dangerously mistaken.

Other factors conspired in the party’s debacle. One in particular haunts me. From the presidential race on down, Democrats adopted a strategy of inclusiveness that excluded a hefty share of Americans and consigned many to a “basket of deplorables” who aren’t all deplorable. Some are hurt. Some are confused.

Liberals miss this by being illiberal. They shame not just the racists and sexists who deserve it but all who disagree. A 64-year-old Southern woman not onboard with marriage equality finds herself characterized as a hateful boob. Never mind that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton weren’t themselves onboard just five short years ago.

Political correctness has morphed into a moral purity that may feel exhilarating but isn’t remotely tactical. It’s a handmaiden to smugness and sanctimony, undermining its own goals.

I worry about my and my colleagues’ culpability along these lines. I plan to use greater care in how I talk to and about Americans more culturally conservative than I am. That’s not a surrender of principle or passion. It’s a grown-up acknowledgment that we’re a messy, imperfect species.

We are not hurt. We are not confused. We are not deplorable - we just wear the label with honor because of the perfidy of those who conferred it.

We are pissed. Pissed at a bunch of anti-American turncoat sell-out whiners who tried to destroy everything that America really stands for. You claim compassion, but you spit on all, your whorshippers and your detractors alike. You claim justice, but you deliver no justice to anyone. But you aren't deplorable. We are deplorable. You - you are despicable.

And you are stupid and delusional. Instead of talking to each other in an echo chamber, listen. Listen to us. Follow a couple of folks on twitter you don't want to hear from. Read Free Republic - just don't join and don't clutter it up with postings of your trashy rants.

To my thinking, this author gives Trump too little credit for his insight. The democrats missed what was happening to the middle class working folk, to be sure.

I am a "birther". (One who was interested in exploring Obama's eligibility for the office of President.)

I realized when Trump started making noises indicating he was interested in the "birther" question, that this was a feeler into the conservative base. It didn't cost him anything to show a little support to this marginalized group, but they would likely remember it.

That's when I realized he was probably going to run for President.

The man is shrewd. He is a lot more clever than his enemies presumed.

Liberal in the old sense has to apply to all. We have no license to bully any more than they do.

I agree - he’s very shrewd and like Reagan he allows people to underestimate him at their own peril.

If Obama didn’t want people to question his place of birth, why did he put out a pamphlet listing his place of origin as Kenya?

"Yankee Doodle" was a song created by the British to mock Americans. We embraced it.

No it's not about being polite. It's about being wrong. It's about substituting propoganda for facts and argument. If you had facts [what you liberals call true facts] and you could argue you would be half way towards being conservative. If you actually had principle, any principle that did not violate human or natural law, and actually stood on it you would be a lot further still towards being a conservative.

Conservatism is not a dogma, like radicalism. It's a way of life based on the ideas of the enlightenment and the rights granted under British common law.

It’s the Democraps who have a lot of vulnerable senate seats up in 2018, so they should not start getting smug for a long long time.

Could not agree more. But on our side all I see are folks trying to get organized quickly to MAGA. On their side, Soros funded riots and looting.

If they disagree with all of that then I double dog dare them to criticize it and denounce Soros. But they aren't.

I agree. I read something somewhere the day of the election (before results) that said the person didn’t believe Trump had got as far as he had without God’s intervention. I believe that to be true.

What they need to do is find some journalists real quick - you know, guys and gals or transgendered or ungendered or whatever who will work to find out the true truth, and then can write well-written articles telling the truth. And oh it means, saving your personal opinions for a Dear Editor letter.

Unfortunately that means giving up propogandizing and SJ warrioring.

Great that through his condescending sanctimony he realizes that all the racist, sexist, homophobes are not sexist.

“There are plenty of things that the democratic party could have done besides looking down their noses at us Trump supporters and calling us every name in the book.”

I believe a lot of Trump support came as a result of cultural issues. People have had it up to their ears with all the propaganda organs and their enforcement of political correctness. Trump eviscerated both the media and PC, and he got the biggest applause when he was doing so.

Here’s a clip from Milo Yiannopoulos giving voice to those sentiments in his very inimitable way.

And the ugliness is from ugly people...some paid to perform. We all suspected there would be protests after this election, and even more so if the Dems lost. Some are actual protestors, but the majority IMO are paid dissenters making $15 per hour. Cheapskates selling their souls for $15 an hour.

“The Democrat establishment is defeated, reeling, but in the absence of credible opposition, resurgent. They’ll be back too.”

The left never, ever gives up. I hope our side doesn’t get complacent...
