Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump -- who said he has a concealed carry permit -- called for the expansion of gun rights Friday, including making those permits applicable nationwide. In a position paper published on his website Friday afternoon, Trump called for the elimination of gun and magazine bans, labeling them a "total failure."
"Law-abiding people should be allowed to own the firearm of their choice. The government has no business dictating what types of firearms good, honest people are allowed to own," Trump wrote.
It's not a departure from what he's said on the trail this year, though it does mark a shift from a position he took in his 2000 book "The America We Deserve," where Trump stated that he generally opposes gun control but that he supported a ban on assault weapons and a longer waiting period to get a gun.
"Opponents of gun rights try to come up with scary sounding phrases like 'assault weapons', 'military-style weapons' and 'high capacity magazines' to confuse people," Trump wrote Friday. "What theyre really talking about are popular semi-automatic rifles and standard magazines that are owned by tens of millions of Americans."

I'm for a national ccw, but we have to be very careful of the wolf in sheeps clothing. Trump I would Trust. Congress making the laws, not so much.
If only he’ll also repeal Reagan’s ridiculous ban on machine guns manufactured after ‘86. I guess that would be a bit much though.
I’m In !
Go Trump!
Which are?
I want a .357 mag every time I blow dry my Hands in the wash room.
Guys, I’m thinking that Donald has heard some bad news about pending circumstances in the US and/or the world.
I’m thinking he wants to encourage all of us to protect ourselves, our families, and our country.
GO TRUMP!
Not in any way did Bush attempt these things.
He did a lot of work on other things, though, due to 9/11.
Constitutional Carry everywhere!
(and get rid of the term “assault weapon”/educate. don’t indoctrinate)
Wait until TRUMP puts it in place first.
I want to be able to carry in all my doctors offices too, they are all located in MEMPHIS, TN Crime Capitol of TN 193 murders as of last night. They are so scared of my gun they have signs up no guns. Yet their drugs will kill you or give you another disease. And those idiot perfume signs are useless, body washes stink as bad and effect allergy sufferers as bad as a perfume. NO PERFUMED any thing plain old soap and put the glycerine back in them.
As per Dr. John Lott, when this happens, watch the crime rate plummet.
This and getting illegal criminals out of America will eliminate much of our safety problems cost of managing the disasters caused by the illegal criminals and the BLMers.
The process in Californicator land makes it basically impossible to get a C&C permit.
The background checks need to be amended also. Too many people being denied the right to buy a gun for minor BS that happened years ago.
So you believe XIV incorporates I-X against the States?
A step in the right direction but we really need nationwide constitutional carry.
What we the people need more is the law changed to remove ‘registration for sound suppressors. THAT is a health issue we could really get behind!
We need to be really careful with this. I do not think a national “permit” system is a good idea. This would establish that the federal government can establish strict standards for the States. What about all the States that now have Constitutional carry? There have been national CCW reciprocity bills in Congress for years, but GOA has been opposed to all except the ones that protect permitless carry.
Why would we need an amendment? Federal law supersedes state and local and we already have an amendment. Seemswe could do it with a law.
Because states choose to recognize marriage and drivers licenses, under certain conditions. Before the Supreme Court decision some states legalized gay marriage and other states refused to recognize those marriages. That is their right under the 10th Amendment. Kansas is a rural state and they will grant restricted drivers license at 14. But move to California and that 14 year old won't be able to drive. That, too, is their right under the 10th Amendment. CCW permits should be no different.
The Second Amendment guarantees the right to keep arms. When and how you carry outside is a matter that is entirely within the power of a state to regulate.
“So you believe XIV incorporates I-X against the States?”
I believe that any state law that restricts or prohibits any constitutional right is the legitimate domain for federal action.
There is plenty of room for interpretation of specific laws on the use and or display of firearms within a jurisdiction, but I think the simple act of crossing a state line a with a firearm should not constitute in and of itself a felony and it is proper for federal law to weigh in.
There is ample precedent in all kinds of areas of federal law that underpin this and take supremacy over state law. There are plenty of areas where it is unreasonable. This would not be unreasonable because it is an enumerated constitutional right, as such states do not have the right to limit the right to bear arms of a free man crossing a state line, in my opinion.
Why should a state be able to, for instance, prevent Catholics from traveling across a state line? That is a logical extension of what I think your argument appears to be.
I can’t believe you would argue this, so please explain why one constitutional right is able to be limited by state law, and another is not.
