True dat. We can talk about the latest science, but thinkers have a way of at least threatening to unsettle what we thought was settled. What we now call dark matter was one such threat. Were we going to lean away from our traditional laws of gravitation or were we going to posit a new kind of substance? Science is about coming up with ever-improving explanations, but never a guarantee that it has a perfect one.
Ever hear of Barry Marshall and Robin Warren? They came up with the theory that many gastric ulcers are caused by a bacteria.
Everybody thought they were crackpots, because settled science. They won the Nobel prize in 2005 for decribing the role of H. pylori in gastric ulcers. And 16 years later there is still some debate over the cause.
