How Did Hillary Clinton Screw This Up? For Starters, Her Advertising Was All Wrong
Advertising Age ^ | November 9, 2016 | Simon Dumenco

So where did Hillary Clinton go wrong? Other than, well, being Hillary Clinton -- a widely disliked and distrusted candidate?

Ad Age Editor Ken Wheaton just asked me if I thought Donald Trump's triumph is about "traditional advertising and millions in spending being useless."

My short answer: Actually, no.

My longer answer is that, while Donald Trump obviously benefited from an unprecedented level of free media coverage, which convinced him for much of the race that he didn't need to waste money on ads, in the end Team Trump did, in fact, plow a ton of money into advertising -- and it cunningly, strategically outperformed tone-deaf Team Clinton.

To put that another way, Clinton badly screwed up her ad game.

This is an interesting article about the role of advertising in both candidate's campaigns with a couple YouTube videos for examples.

The Clinton ad the author uses as an example, the one with little children watching TV and showing Trump supposedly saying bad things, was deplorable. I think I saw this during one of the world series games. I found it profoundly distasteful and it angered me. Seeing it again, I realize why. It was the young children used in such a deplorable way. Even if you wanted Clinton to win, it was off-putting. And if you were on the fence, it was so horrible one might look with different eyes at one who would make such a horrible commercial.

And now with the pizza and walnut talk, and those sad looking children, it gives it another twist.

Scott Adams says about this article: “In other words, bullying isn’t a good advertising strategy.”

I think the article should have mentioned that Hillary spent twice as much per voter than Trump did

I’m sure the error of using young children for adult purposes is hitting her like a Comet.

Her moronic and lying campaign ads on TV were shown so much that people just went numb to them. I’d just holler at the TV and go back to what I was doing. LOL!

There`s no substitute for having the right message and telling the truth. Could `better packaging` have made Hillary easier to sell? Possibly, in any other year, when she would have faced a Romney, or McCain or someone like them. But not against a truth teller like Trump. When truth has an effective communicator like Trump, it usually wins.

Hillary’s commercials always began with that unmistakable voice that blended condescension and arrogance. They were an instant channel flip.

I don't know. I think that the Daybreak polls made clear where the problem was at the end. Trump voters were motivated to vote no matter what, they drew from both sides of the spectrum, and Hillary's weren't.

Getting people out to vote against someone is hard, as many Republican candidates from the primaries can attest in their battle to defeat Trump.

Add in the echo chambers that supporters created for themselves they created the self delusion that they were far more numerous than required to defeat Trump. Reinforcing that were numerous polls saying that Hillary was ahead.

I think the ads played minimal impact other than showing colors and telling motivated voters that they weren't alone.

No. The blame completely resides with this evil, corrupt piece of worthless drivel. She is anathema.

Astonishing that much of America still doesn’t get the blatantly obvious fact that, “This is not a nice lady.”

Hillary never gave anyone a reason to vote FOR her.
Pretty simple.

Yours is a very interesting take. I noticed it too. Where does this revulsion to H’s ads come from?

To me, it’s the natural resistance to lies and untruth and evil within the human soul.

Why does this occur? Because we see through the eyes of creation. Because John 14:6.

Based on your comment, you might appreciate this from https://t.co/oeab8Ge9fF:

Dan Hopkins 11:24 PM
Is It Turnout Or Persuasion?

“As we grapple with Trump’s unexpected strength in key swing states, we face a key question: Are changes in turnout or persuasion at work? Is it more about who turned out or stayed home or who changed votes from 2012 to today? And while both factors are likely at work, there’s a basic piece of math that makes persuasion more likely to be the underlying driver: When turnout changes, a single vote goes into or out of a candidate’s column. But when a voter is persuaded to switch sides, a vote drops from one tally and joins another, in effect doubling its impact. There will be plenty of time to look at the data, but persuasion has an advantage out of the gate.”
