Don't worry. These people don't know much about Canadian Immigration laws.
If they have any kind of conviction, even for something as "minor" as drunk driving they are going to have trouble even getting over the border, much less immigrating. Canada has border controls and immigration laws. It sounds like the US might be getting the same thing soon.

IIRC, prospective immigrants have to prove to Canadian authorities that they possess useful employable skills and can thus be an asset to society.
