When the KKK’s favorite candidate — a man who mocks a disabled reporter, brags about sexually assaulting women, dabbles in anti-Semitic tropes and paints Mexican immigrants as “rapists” — gets elected, many of us ask rightly ask: What has become of the openhearted, tolerant, decent America so many of us were certain would reject a character like Donald Trump?
As the country awakes bleary-eyed and disoriented, we are certain that the lights will come up, the horror film will end and all will be put back to normal. The alt-right will go lick its wounds, the lying opportunists will be banished and sanity will have prevailed, right? No, not this time.
We — like just about everyone else, including the Trump campaign itself — failed to see what was coming, but perhaps we can make sense of what happened. Here goes.

When the rant begins “When the KKK’s favorite candidate ...”, why bother reading any more? Start with an invidious comparison and you have no place to go but into the toilet! By the by, what is the Washington Compost going to do with those 20 dedicated journalists?
Why would the KKK support Donald Trump? The KKK was started by the Democratic Party as their terrorist arm to provide a means of keeping newly freed slaves in submission. As a Democratic Party entity, I would expect it to support the Democratic nominee.
