California voters on Tuesday defeated a ballot measure to repeal the states death penalty, and instead narrowly passed a proposition that aims to amend and expedite it.
The outcome concluded a closely watched ballot race to address what people on both sides of the debate have agreed is a broken system.
Proposition 62, which would have replaced capital punishment for murder with life in prison without parole, garnered 46.1% of the vote.
Proposition 66 intended to speed up executions by designating trial courts to hear petitions challenging death row convictions, limiting successive petitions and expanding the pool of lawyers who could take on death penalty appeals.
It won the approval of 50.9% of voters.
The Associated Press called both races early Wednesday morning.

This has been a wake up day to criminals all around.
Wow they got one right.
FINALLY my vote counted for something in this state
Wow!
Why do they even do amendments in California. The courts will just overturn the will of the people.
I voted yes to keep it, but the Catholic in me voted against the expediting. Really disappointed in marijuana legalization...Euthanasia already legal in the state, and horrified it’s legalized now in Colorado and other states as of yesterday. :(
BUT TRUMP IS PRESIDENT SO YAYYYYYY!!!!!!!!! I believe the general mood and tone of the culture can shift and hopefully people will be WORKING instead of getting high on pot to escaping the pain of a broken, soulless, godless society.
Praying for revival in America!
Exactly, in 2008, even though minorities came out in droves for Obama, they also overwhelmingly voted AGAINST gay marriage as a state proposition.
Only the ones favored by the right.
Executions should be public.
There is no deterrent if future-criminals don’t see what to expect.
I agree. Especially for cop killers. They should be hung in public in an expeditied manner.
Support for the death penalty is a mile wide and an inch deep. Guarantee life imprisonment without parole and most people would support a change. I think Trump would have something here if it’s presented in a consistent pro-life manner.
...Wow they got one right....
I don’t think they actually understood which Amendment did what and were confused about what they were voting for and aginst.
Does this mean that Charles Manson will finally become worm food?
Not via execution. The Manson Cult had their sentences commuted to Life back when the Capital sentence was outlawed briefly in the 70’s. (Which is why they keep coming up for parole). Charley isn’t on Death Row.
Gibbets and Crows
This was a wonderful surprise!
True.
Surprising
