THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

COLE PORTER

ANYTHING GOES

Tonight is dedicated to one of Cole’s most memorable songs, something that is timeless because it can be adapted to any era.

COLE PORTER: “ANYTHING GOES”

The intro is in the minor which permits a wonderful change of mood when the song slips into the major. The middle eight changes key completely. You can see why the Upper West Side loved him and his entertainment at dinner parties.

ANYTHING GOES

THE DORSEY BROTHERS: “ANYTHING GOES”

This 1934 recording is from the original band before the brothers decided to go their separate ways. Both Glenn Miller and Bob Crosby were part of this early band. The Big Band era beach scenes in the video are a kick.

ANYTHING GOES

ETHEL MERMAN: “ANYTHING GOES”

Ethel created the role of Reno Sweeney in the original 1934 musical. In this kinescope from “Texaco Star Theater” in the Fifties, she recreates her scene from the musical with a few changes in the lyrics for the show.

ANYTHING GOES

ELLA FITZGERALD: “ANYTHING GOES”

Ella’s 1956 recording turns it into something that is gently Big Band. She had perfect diction, and you can actually hear all those Thirties pop culture references.

FRANK SINATRA: “ANYTHING GOES”

This was one of Frank’s favorite songs, and he recorded it a number of times. This 1956 recording is laid back at first, but then takes off.

Thanks, guys, for the tunes for our troops. I probably won’t be able to play tunes until Mom is in bed. This afternoon and evening I’ve probably made 50 trips to the living room trying to dissuade her that there were not 20-30 men in white working in the front yard, probably working on putting the electric service underground.

No men, all services have been underground for years.

Then all the police cars that were arriving...there are no police cars. Yes, see the writing on the door...see that one says “senior police”. The neighbors are having a party and maybe 20 cars have arrived, all police cars. The minute I get back to my computer, another police car arrives. Back to the living room...

Don’t worry about it if you can’t get back. We’ll be around for a while and you need to reassure your mom all is ok. I don’t think it will do any good. Once the hallucinations start, they don’t stop. What would happen if you just agreed with her? Would it just make it worse?

Take your time...is what I’m trying to say. :)
