The FBI stumbled upon a trove of emails from one of Hillary Clinton's top aides weeks ago, law enforcement officials told CNN Sunday.
But FBI Director James Comey didn't disclose the discovery until Friday, raising questions about why the information was kept under wraps and then released only days before the election.
The timeline behind the discovery of the emails came into greater clarity Sunday. Investigators took possession of multiple computers related to the inquiry of Anthony Weiner in early October, U.S. law enforcement officials said. Weiner is Abedin's estranged husband and is being probed about alleged sexting with a purportedly underage girl.
Technical experts at the FBI began procedures to catalogue the emails found on one of the computers and soon found emails belonging to Abedin. The discovery surprised investigators, triggering legal issues because the search warrant was limited to the sexting case. That's why the Justice Department sought the new search warrant.
Senior officials at the FBI, including Andrew McCabe, the FBI deputy director, were briefed on the issue. By mid-October, Comey learned investigators in the Weiner case might have found something that could have an impact on the now-closed probe into Hillary Clinton's private email server, according to one law enforcement official. Comey was told investigators were still trying to figure out how many emails existed and their pertinence to the Clinton probe. Senior Justice Department officials were briefed on the situation about a week ago and Comey was given a full briefing Thursday, the officials said, triggering his decision to notify members of Congress Friday that the FBI was reviewing emails potentially related to Clinton's server.

After Comey’s July 5 speech I believed he was dirty and I haven’t seen anything to change that evaluation.
This seems like a CYA on his part to act before the story came from other sources.
It seems to me that he only acted on this latest “discovery” when outside forces overwhelmed him.

Comey’s hand was forced by Wikileaks. Their Phase 3 releases start on Nov 1. Comey was going to look pretty bad when this stuff started flowing out.
Comey has created a mess of historic proportions and nearly destroyed the credibility of his agency.

From the time they first learned of these emails til they told Comey. Andrew McCabe was told weeks ago and sat on it, that’s the delay. McCabe’s wife is running for Senate and received help from Clinton pal Gov. McAulliffe, that’s why I said the whole lot of ‘em should be in jail. McCabe is dirty.

I read an article earlier that said that Wikileaks gave the FBI Hillarys missing emails a few weeks ago and plans to release them, all 33,000, to the public tomorrow. And this is what prompted Comey to take action.
MSM rallying behind Hillary, trying to portray Comey as partisan, blah blah blah.
They were all fine with Comey’s ruling back in July.
And CNN wonders why Trump won’t be nice to them. Corrupt to the core. Compare the headline to the timeline. The timeline is perfectly reasonable, not “withholding” the announcement to Congress.
More likely Comey was sitting on them hoping to hide them until after the election but his hand got forced either by the NYPD saying they were going to put them out or by his own agents giving him an ultimatum. Either way they were going out, the question was whether Comey was going to go down as leading a cover up or go down for putting them out so late.
LA Times too, headline all about questioning the timing. Who cares about the broken laws?
